Default transaxle

ok i had to pick up a used transaxle and got confused.
here is a pic of my current trans notice the seal for the halfshaft
http://www.stlsupra.com/galler...ull=1

now on the new one there is no seal but a flat metal plate??

i'm worried the halfshaft will leak and am thinking i will need a different shaft to mate the seal?

If you're replacing the transmission you should definitely get new axle seals anyway. It's kinda hard to tell what the deal is with the new tranny from that pic, but it looks like they may have just removed that seal.....or is the shiny/glared surface in the picture TOTALLY flat ie, no recess to seat the axle seal??

yeah the glare is totally flat metal. i'll try to take a better non glare picture

edit: updated pic of questionable seal
http://www.stlsupra.com/galler..._0451

double edit:
is this just the metal behind the seal? so the seal is just missing?

Thanks for that last pic, that does help a lot.

OK this is by no means the gospel, but it looks to me like that big flat piece that says "USA" on it is actually the old seal or a piece of it. It just doesn't look like part of the transmission to me.... So see if you can pry that up gently with a screwdriver or something.

The seal should press tightly into a recess in the transmission. It looks like that big USA piece is in that exact spot, but it looks like no axle seal I've ever seen before. Weird......

I say do your best to pry that ****** out if it's not solid metal. And please update the thread so we all know what happens!!

thanks,

well i went to the local part store and bought a seal. there is no way that the seal seperated from the metal as there is no metal in the seal. so this is something completly different??? the reciept i got from the salvage yard where i got the transaxle also had the vin. i did a car fax on it and it listed as a 1990 crx si. so i don't get why its different?

i'm tempted to put it all back togethor and just see if it leaks fluid.

well i put a pry bar on the thing and noticed as i pushed the disc would bend. wasn't metal at all even tho it looks like it. so its just a metal colored rubber piece. i decided to leave it and if it leaks i'll rip it out.

I finished last night and drove around the block, no leak. drove to work this morning and so far nothing on the ground. i'll get back under there tonight for final desicsion.

thanks for the help!
