ZEX KIT on my Gsr...
Im lookin at gettin a zex kit for my gsr and runnin a 75 shot at the track and 55 on the street.... Its comin off of a 2000 civic si... this would fit my 97 GSR right? I have some questions, i searched and found limited topics in the integra forum...
1. What is necessary to run this safely?
2. Are my OEM NGK plugs ok to run?
3. Retarding my timing? Would this negatively affect my car while daily driving?
4. Are gauges necessary?
5. Anything else i may have missed....

1. What is necessary to run this safely? It is hard to be completely safe when spraying but don’t spray up hills and don’t do back to back sprays.
2. Are my OEM NGK plugs ok to run? i think so but not sure
3. Retarding my timing? Would this negatively affect my car while daily driving?
its going to make it slower when not spraying.
4. Are gauges necessary?I would get a nitrous gauge so you know how many sprays you have left/ how full your tank is.

1. What is necessary to run this safely? Colder spark plugs 1-2 steps colder almost any auto part store carys em
2. Are my OEM NGK plugs ok to run? see #1
3. Retarding my timing? Its fine just dont retard it too much
4. Are gauges necessary? ive seen pressure and temp guages but most of the time they just mount them on the bottle
5. Anything else i may have missed.... make sure you dont have a horrible clutch or one thats starting to go bad, ive also heard bottle warmers are a really nice upgrade some say its even a must
Everything should transfer over from the si
Four1one beat me to the answers. BTW, why would you want to use Nitrous on the street?? That is dangerous. Dont know how built your engine is or the condition of it but i would start small until you know it can hold it. Upgrade your clutch if you havent already. Bottle warmers are good too.
By the looks of it, you really need to do more research on nitrous and its effects on an engine.

Running spray safely is always the question i would suggest at a minimal
1. msd pill rpm windows (spray from 4000 rpm - 7200rpm) worst enemy of spray is hitting the red-line, fuel-cut will occur at redline + spray = bad joojoos
2. No your plugs are not a good idea you should run plugs that are 2 stages colder so they don't turn into glow plugs, glow plugs on non-diesel cars are bad. I would recommend zex plugs 30 bucks on ebay all day
3. no should not affect anything unless retard to much, if anything help you start your car in the morning
4. you should have a nitrous pressure gauge somewhere within the system, also should get a bottle heater. cold days = no bottle pressure = not much spray
5. make sure your car is mechanically stable, not knocking or what not good compression
6. some people say you need aftermarket ignitions eg jacobs, msd not necessary just make sure your plug wires, coil, rotor, cap ect are in good condition. i would consider better spark plug wires and a new coil, cap, rotor.
7. if you have a fuel pressure regulator turn it to around 48-49 psi WOT (wide open throttle) you need to run a little rich to run spray. if you don't have one get one and a fuel pressure gauge !!
i would not recommend 75 shot on a stock internal gsr, 55 is safe and more than you will need !!
pm me if you need anymore info i hate to see gsr go to waste

Is nitrous safe?
Absolutely, so long as you have taken the proper precautions and do not get carried away with the shot size.
Here are some of the most frequent questions that I have been asked since I posted up the Nitrous Basics article. I hope that this will help answer some of the things that I did not cover in the first installment. If you have something that needs to be placed in here feel free to let me know and I will get it done. Also, I will be adding things to this as I go along so check back every now and then for more FAQ’s.

Absolutely, so long as you have taken the proper precautions and do not get carried away with the shot size.
How big of a shot can my car take?
For Honda/Acura street cars the maximum shot that you should ever consider running is a 125 shot and this is extreme! Most people however will run somewhere between a 50-80 shot. Just remember that with a dry kit you can only go up to a 75 shot. If you have any aspirations to go higher then you will need a wet set-up.
When should I spray?
The best time to start the injection is right after you have gained traction and are at wide-open throttle (WOT). Additionally, you should NOT spray while in 1st or 5th gear. The reason you don’t want to spray in 1st gear is because unless you have a progressive nitrous controller you will never be able to get traction off the line under full spray conditions. As for 5th gear, this is your highway gear and is not meant to handle a big jolt of power. You will also want to keep from spraying in anything under 2500 rpm or above 7800 rpm (remember where your fuel cutoff is and don’t hit it!!).
How long should I spray?
Although you could theoretically keep the nitrous flowing until the bottle is empty, the general rule of thumb is 15 consecutive seconds maximum.
I have an automatic transmission!! Can I still use nitrous?
Yes, you can but it is best that you keep the shot relatively low (no more than 75). For smaller shots the automatic guys can actually sometimes get a better benefit out of nitrous than manual guys because you do not have to get off the gas to shift. The problem is that over time the bands in the auto tranny will eventually wear out.
I have high miles!! Can I still use nitrous?
Yes, you can but make absolutely sure that your car will pass a leak down and compression test PRIOR to the installation of nitrous. You have to be sure that your rings and seals are all in good condition or problems will start to arise very quickly.
How many shots can I get out of my bottle?
That depends upon what size shot you are running and how long you are spraying each shot. A good estimate is approximately 4-5mins total on a 10 lb. bottle but then again there are a lot of variables involved. Holley, the makers of NOS say this, “For example, a 125 HP Shot kit with a standard 10 lb. capacity bottle will usually offer up to 7 to 10 full quarter-mile passes.”
What will nitrous do to my 1/4 mile times?
This question will depend upon TONS of other factors like modifications and driver skill but as a general rule of thumb this is what you can expect.
50 shot will take about .5-.75 seconds off your 1/4 time
70 shot will take about .75-1 seconds off your 1/4 time
100 shot will take about 1-1.5 seconds off your 1/4 time
Will I be able to see a dramatic performance gain when I spray?
Usually if you are only running a 50-60 shot you will only feel a very slight kick in acceleration. It is when you get to the 70+ shot level that you start to really “feel” the nitrous kick. The point here is to understand that you will not be able to rule the drag strip on a 50 shot. Now, that being said, if you use a plate kit (for GSR’s only remember) or a direct port injection kit then you will be able run with/beat SOME of the domestics and turbo guys.
What should my bottle pressure be in order to get a good shot?
The best bottle pressure to have is usually somewhere between 900-1050 psi. Your best bet is to find out what the manufacturer recommends.
Is nitrous illegal?
For most states it is ILLEGAL to have the nitrous system ARMED while driving on public roads. If you are just driving around with the system off then you should be safe. That is why a remote bottle opener is such a great thing! The best thing to do though is to check with your local and state laws. What’s the moral of the story you ask?? DON’T GET CAUGHT BY THE POLICE WHILE RUNNING NITROUS ON THE STREETS!! Be smart and use common sense.
Do I really have to retard my timing?
Well, as I mentioned in my Nitrous Basics article this topic is always under debate. Just remember the rule of thumb, which is to retard timing 2 degrees for each 50 shot of nitrous. The best thing to do is to get a MSD Digital 6 ignition or a Jacobs Nitrous Mastermind with a lower level ignition (*will not work with ZEX*). Both of these products will automatically retard your timing only when they sense boost, otherwise you get to keep you normal timing.
I like gauges!! Which ones make sense for a nitrous set-up?
Some good gauges to have in your nitrous set-up are:
Nitrous pressure gauge
Fuel pressure gauge
Air/fuel gauge
Ok, I know you need colder spark plugs to safely run nitrous. What is a good spark plug to run?
NGK bkr7e’s are a great choice and my recommended plug but you can also use Zex plugs or any plug that has a similar profile to the NGK's as well

Thanks both for the help.... how much slower would i be with the retarded timing? Wont a window switch allow me to run stock timing... or an msd ignition so that it would retard only while juicin... sry if that sounds dumb... im a noob with juice..

you only need to retard the timing a degre or two it will be almost unnoticable unless advanced right now !
No a msd window activiation purpose is it allows the nitrous to spray between two rpm pills, for example you don't want to run spray at a low rpm so get you open activation pill to be 4000 rpm, your deactivation where it cuts the spray off at 7500rpm if you hit your red-line its cuts the fuel if your still spraying your looking at internal engine damage. this is the biggest thing i reccomend with zex plugs and a 45 or 55 jet and your good to go

thanks for your input.... so retarding the timin a bit would be hardly noticable.. thats cool, i was just worrying it would really slow me down for daily driving... oh and another question... if im gonna put the bottle in the trunk.. wouldnt that hinder me from gettin my spare tire out? Or are you supposed to cut a hole in yourcarpet and cover board back there or waht?
well mine sits on the far side doesn't touch the cardboard, i try to use the carpet to cover it haha
thats why you keep a couple tools in the trunk Just in case

I have the Zex kit on my GS-R. You have to run colder plugs like NGK irridiums or Denso Irridiums(I ran Denso). Make sure when you hit the spray...you throtle is wide open and you shouldn't have any probs...its fun!!!

i got a question...alright i was at a shop today and some guy told me that if i ran an auxillary tank with trick fuel and an extra soleniod to run with the nitrous that it would prevent detonation and run cooler and reliable with a 100shot so my question is is that true???
FOur1one____ i bet if i took my 6,000 dollar integra and half of what u still owe on that STI into my motor ur STI wouldnt ever stand a chance for one my motor would have about 15G's into it and your starting cost for a stock sti was almost 30 so do u really want to go there?

what wtf why and how ?? Nitrous is cold by trait ?? when your spraying nitrous will freeze or chill just about anything it encounters? no 100 shot is a 100 shot it is the wear and initial jolt on the vehicle that damages in most cases. to lean out of fuel with a safe amount of nitrous
a your car is a piece of **** with a clogged fuel filter
b your pulling some stupid fast and the furious **** 150 shot on a stock d16
okay nitrous 101
When you heat nitrous oxide to about 550 degrees (which happens when introduced in a hot combustion chamber), it splits into oxygen and nitrogen. So the injection of nitrous oxide into an engine means that more oxygen is available during combustion = more power. Because you have more oxygen, you can also inject more fuel, allowing the same engine to produce more power.
nitrous also reduces the intake air temperature, you increase the air's density, and this provides even more oxygen inside the cylinder = more horsepower
thanks the german for nitrous !!
for a 100 shot safely (key word) you will probally need at least forged internals apr studs fuel mods some sort of igntion a nitrous mastermind would be nice new clutch new alot of **** thats not worth it.
run a safe amount if you start laughing uncontrollablely pull over and enjoy afterwards tighten up the bottle

I hear a lot how a 75 shot will wear out my clutch... Im gettin the zex kit with a 55 65 75 shot... so im likely to start off with the 55 and move my way up only using the 75 at the track... so i should i just keep it at 55 until i get stronger clutch? Does anyone have any actual pics of there nitrous setups?
Dude i am in the progress of running a fully built block with a ported and polished head crower 403 cams and a 75 sot of nitro with the 450 hp full-race kit when its done i will run u anyday! bring that shitje pistons S-rods
