engine studder at 5500
Whenever im at WOT and i hit 5500rpm, the engine will studder and fall back to 5000 and not shift, then bounce back and forth between 5000 and 5500. I thought it may be plugs and wires but i replaced them and to no avail (cap and rotor could use it to). The only thing is, it wil only do this in second gear. If i slam it at a stop, it goes but kinda hangs out at 5500 for a few seconds before shifting. at half throttle the thing runs, shifts and drives great unless you wanna go fast. I was thinking maybe its a problem with vtec or the tranny is giving up but i know the guy who owned it and it never saw anything above 4000rpm. im not a real speed demon but its nice to know when i hit the gas, it will move. If anyone has any idea help me out...thanks
btw its a 94 ex wagon, auto, 212K miles....ORIGINAL EVERYTHING and still runs/drives better than my 03 tiburon with 52K and NEW EVERYTHING

It sounds like you're up against the Rev Limiter (Rpm bounces between 5/55), far short of the 6200 red line.
The question now is why. Ecm in "Failsafe mode? Check Engine Lamp on?

I dont think its the rev limiter cuz it dosent really drop down like a rev limiter, it more bogs/sputters out back down to 5k (you can feels the loss of power and it sounds like it gonna die out) Oh that reminds me, the CEL will come on after i let off the gas (i can hold it floored and it will go to 5500 then bog down to 5000 then back up and stay in second the whole time, all day) one more thing if its in neutral, it blasts straight for the rev limiter and stays there like it should, it only craps out like that when its in drive. i tried reseting the ecu that didnt work, I just got it inspected the other day and it passed so i guess theres no stored error codes...
Partially clogged in-line fuel filter (insufficient fuel volume at high demand) or clogged Catalytic Converter (can't flow sufficient exhaust at speed)
