Default OEM catalitic conv. on 90 Si - welded or bolted?

On my 2000 Si, the catalytic convertor from the factory is a bolt-on unit. I went to go measure the cat on my 1990 Si, and well, it looks like the cat is welded to the b-pipe.

wtf. is that how they used to be from the factory? or was this a replacement job that was welded on?

Yeah, that sucks. Gadda love when you find little hidden treats in your car. Just found out the guy w/ my SOHC ZC before me made a homemade keyway for the crank pulley. Now it has grinded away some material and has play on the crank. So now I get to put out some more money to fix it right.

But yeah, like the above person said, cut it and weld it. But this time weld a flange on!

EDIT: Noticed the quote in your signature. Haha. DEFINITELY relevant here.

If you don't have a welder, it might be cheaper and easier to just buy an unaltered pipe from a salvage yard.
