a lot of people will say simple green, followed by a good spray down with tire shine foam .

The car wash engine de-greaser. I don't have alot gunk buildup in my engine bay cause I use it often and it works great. If you have alot of buildup than Simple green. After that spray some tire shine on the engine and watch it bling.

well.. if you are able to be hooked up with anything industrial.. we have used (Swish) FACTO PM23 industrial cleaner/degreaser at the shop on both customers and our own engine bays!! It is Acid/Alkaline based and absolutely works amazing on grease and grime..

although if you are going to use anything like that.. DO NOT leave it on too long on anything aluminum or electrical.. because it will eat it away.. PM23 and a Pressure Washer PWNS all!!

or if you just want something you can buy at any auto store.. anything citrus/acid based degreaser will work.. some higher strength cleaners can work.. but will need more than 2-3 applications and alot of "elbow grease"
