Insurance is gonna kill me!
Ok I checked my rate for a 2001 R6 from progressive. Im 19 and have had about 6 traffic violations in the last two years as well as 1 accident, and 1 car stolen from me. For full coverage the quote was $11670 per year!!!!! WTF?? Does anyone with a shabby driving record have a good rate and if so from what company?
Thats ridiculous. Its about $4,000 more than the bike is worth! In WA no insurance is required but there is no way in hell im going to buy a new bike without full coverage.
Theres a reason why it's so expensive. 19 in control of a vehicle with a better power to weight ratio than almost any supercar, and with 6 tickets. Do you know what the odds of you totaling that bike are (not to mention, totaling yourself)
Get yourself a "standard" bike, the insurance is alot ALOT cheaper and your learn to be a better and safer rider. the only down side would be that you would have that "Racer" image....

may i suggest a Kawasaki ZR-7S? A sporty looking standard, or 'naked' bike with a nice fairing for that crotch rocket look (to the non motorcycle crowd). I get asked to do wheelies all too often.
It may be due to it's big brother the R1.
It is on the insurance top 10 black list for being one of the most stolen/totalled sportbikes on the market.
Do as falcongsr says, get something like a naked bike. Actually something that looks pretty damn sweet and is good for a beginner would be a suzuki sv650s.
In my opinion it looks like a mini TL1000s, which is a sweeeeet *** bike too bad they discontinued it.
As for insurance on a bike, when I went to my state farm agent I had 0 points on my license, safe driver discount, good student discount, multi car discount, multi policy discount and the bike as my third vehicle they wanted 4500 per year for my 95 f3. (That did not include what I was paying for the cars) I looked at them and laughed. I was 20 at the time, and that is how much I have paid for the bike. I could total it each year, buy a new one and still come out the same as if I paid their insurance premiums. I have less than a year to go then I hit the big 25. I am hoping they make it affordable enough for me then.

That Kawasaki looks cool but that Suzuki looks REALLY cool! Where can I find pricing on those? Is the sv650s new for 2002? Do the earlier model sv650 (without the S) look the same?
And what makes the SV650S a better choice than the Katana 600? the SV has 50cc more displacement! I know the Katana has a 4-cyl and the SV is a V-twin, what's the big difference? It appears that price-wise they are almost identical.

The older versions of the sv650 did not have the upper fairing, at least in the United States. the sv650s with the upper fairing came out in 2001. The sv is a v twin, they do not rev as high and produce more low end torque as my understanding. It is not extremely high on hp (~70hp), but would be excellent for a beginner bike imho.
Canotuna's um I mean katana well yeah they are supposed to be a sportbike. I think it would be included in the high price insurance due to the fact that they are completely faired and it will be pricey to replace the plastics if/when it goes down.
MSRP on the katana is 6299
MSRP on the sv650s is 6199
They are both considered sport street not supersport bikes which will make the difference to the insurance agent.
Here are some specs for the sv650/sv650s (found at http://www.sv650.org)

What are the performance figures?
Figures are pretty thin on the ground at the moment (Nov '99) but these figures were published in May 1999 Cycle World :
1/4 mi. 11.85 sec. @ 110.17mph.
0-30 mph 1.34 sec.
0-60 mph 3.20 sec.
0-90 mph 6.79 sec.
0-100 mph 8.76 sec.
40-60 mph 3.27 sec.
60-80 mph 3.90 sec.
Measured top speed 128 mph

The katana, well I am not finding much info online as far as specs: http://www.motorcycle.com/mo/mccompa...ue600spex.html
The most benefit is the fact that the sv doesnt have complete plastics, which means cheaper to fix if an accident. Go and sit on both of em, and see which one feels best. The dyno charts show that the katana has ~72hp and 40 ft/lbs of torque.
Personally I like the looks/styling of the sv, but dont let looks sway you. Go and sit on both of them and whatever feels more comfortable to you is what you should choose.
Also try to get them to throw in some gear for a good price.

CBRs are indeed considered supersports...at least by every insurance agency I've gotten a quote from. Gave up on buying a '94 CBR600F2 after hearing repeated quotes over $2500/yr. I'm 24, no tickets, one accident that was deemed not my fault...the freakin' bike cost $2500!
Get a nice SV650 or SV650S...excellent bike for starters, but is so much fun you won't outgrow it too fast. There are lots of them out there used also.

I figured it out. My dad owns his own business and I work for him so therefore we can put the bike on the company's insurance which is super cheap. I think he is paying less than $100 dollars a month for full coverage on a 2002 BMW 5 series.
i hear so many good things about the SV, but i have NEVER seen one on the road and i think once in a parking lot outside a restauraunt/bar.
Here in Cali I see alot of SV650s running around, especially on ortega highway, where I see them running right along with bigger "supersport" bikes. Don't get me wrong, once those bigger bikes get oon the power they'll easily run away but the SV650 is a much more confidence-aspiring bike to ride.
I don't think it matters how old you are or how mwny tickets you have full coverage insurance on a bike is EXPENSIVE!!

98 CBR 900
full coverage $3000 every six months
Liability only $250 a year.
I don't need full coverage that bad, after one year I could buy another bike with the money I saved.

JK ..I'm sure you worked hard for all your toys.
A friend of a friend, bought a bike, financed, it and only got liability coverage. He was fine for a couple months but then he got a call from the company who financed it. They told him he needed full coverage or they would take back the bike. Well I know he couldn't afford full coverage and I know he doesn't have the bike anymore. But I think I know what happened.
Also if you go to a dealership, I'm almost certain they'll all say you need full coverage, because it's still their motorcycle, until you have completely paid it off. They're just protecting themselves.
