Default My mistake. Future CRX is an '86, not an '88. New questions...

I communicated with wife's uncle. The one he drives is an '88, the one I might get is an '86.

This makes the engine question relevent again. The later Si's had the B16A6 engine making 108 hp while this vehicle originally came with a D15A3 making only 91 hp. Is putting the B16 engine into an '86 simply a drop-in job or will this require an adapter kit like putting a JDM or EDM engine would?

Can the original tranny mate with the later engine or will I need to replace that as well?

Let me restate the question then. Can I put an '88 Si USDM engine into an '86 USDM Si without buying extra parts?

i dont think so, because the 86-89 integra motor drops in the ee chassis but not into the ef. This leads me to believe that they arent interchangable but im not 100% sure. imo i would look into a 86-89 zc motor its like 125 hp.

I think I'll lose too much efficiency to go with the ZC. In another post I stated that this car will be used to commute 110 miles each way at least twice a week so efficiency is at a premium.

Unfortunately, although I can find all sorts of resources telling me how much power I can get out of various CRX engines, I haven't seen any mpg specs for anything except the original published numbers in the various Honda CRX brochures. I am going to go with my general understanding of automotive engines and assume that given equal technology the more power I get out of an engine the lower my fuel efficiency will be. I want to stick with an engine in which I can put 87 octane gas and get 30+ mpg on the highway while also having enough power to merge onto a highway and not fear that my little hatchback will get squashed like a bug by the F-150 trying to merge behind me.

A 1st-gen/Browntop ZC will do just that. The D15A3 will too.

Down and dirty answer is NO. Different motor and tranny mounts between a D series and a B series.

Dude, you are still talking about a Honda motor that has 125 HP. It's not a camaro with a 5.7 litre 300HP V8. My B16 get's 30+ MPG in the city and it's supposed to have 160HP. You will be fine with that motor on 87 Octane in the city and on the highway.

1. Check to see that the 86 CRX you are getting is an Si. If not, it will be carb'd and a pain to do any swaps.

2. Look into a browntop ZC (135 PS = 133hp) or a USDM 86-87 Integra D16a1 (118 hp)...both bolt in with minimal fuss. Anything else will require custom fab work or at minimum, a $500+ mount kit.

3. Its not like you're squeezing more hp out of the same engine. If that was the case than yes, more power means less mpg. But you're talking about a completely different engine.
Look up what a stock 86-87 Integra was rated for fuel economy (somewhere like 25/31)...now figure what an 86-87 Integra would get for fuel economy if you removed 500lbs(2400lbs Integra and 1900lbs CRX) from the chassis. Same power but less weight means better fuel economy, right? So if you think of your CRX as an Integra that's had 500lbs removed, you're probably going to get 35+ mpg on the freeway (and have the power you're wanting).
Case in point: My 89 CRX w/ B18b engine from an Integra has gotten 40-43 mpg under ideal circumstances.

I know for a fact it is an Si. I have a little (a lot?) more to learn before thinking about a ZC but your info is encouraging.
