Default What make D16a6`s so loud?!

My friend has a d16a6 with a slightly ported head and a short ram intake and holy **** is it loud! Louder than a stock b16!!

What makes them louder than other single cams? How come a d16y8, which has a bigger intake plenum and more agressive cams (on the vtec lobe) is more quiet?

I know sound /= power but still brings a smile to my face when I hear it

Short ram intakes make any motor loud..Put the short ram intake on the B16a and D16y8 and you'll see..

Well I guess its because that motor is always in high cam..Compared to vtec motors..You're telling me honestly that you think a D16a6 is louder than a B16a in vtec..? Mine is quiet like you say but at 5200rpm when the vtec kicks in it get rediculous loud,,

Look if sound equals power, then when my girl gets mad is like a funny car?
Yeah right.
Loud equals big fart can.

of course sound = power... my d16z6 was fast as hell when i was open header ... i think it has more to do with it being ported and the intake just amplifys it even more... a buddy of mine had a d16a6 in his crx with pnp head, big cam, and a short ram intake and that thing was loud

I said sound /= (doesn`t equal) power.

I`d say they are about the same (only the d16a6 doesn`t rev as high). I like the sound from the b16 the most, but in terms of loudness, I think his d16a6 is louder. Anyways I know it`s a stupid question, who cares about sound and all, but I just cant wait to hear the sound my d16y8 will make after my ITBs

It is louder. My A6 is absurdly loud, I have a short ram intake from the previous owner. My dad has a 2000 Civic Si with an AEM intake. Before I got the CRX, I thought the B16A2 was loud. Now I realize it's not loud when he can hear MY motor when we are next to each other, both revving high and stereo blasting. I literally cannot hear my stereo at full volume when I'm over 5000 RPM. People laugh at me at autocross, you should hear the thing when it bounces off the limiter. Anyone on here who's been to this year's autocrosses at RPI can back that up. I'm getting the CAI from the Si when he trades it up for an 06 in March, HOPEFULLY it will get quieter. And yes, my exhaust is completely stock.

Pfft i thought you were talking about the overall loudness of the motor not some intake piping. I remember when i had my old mint condition 89 si 5 spd red hatchback like 2 years ago or so from now when i first got the muffler cut off it because it was trashed...BAD, anyways long story short i came out of the muffler shop and that bitch was like a cannon boat it was so loud. I got use to it though and never noticed it as being loud anymore, but if i remember correctly it is abnormally louder then other D series motors imo from personal reference.

Ah, the beauty of the sound of an intake... they are so much more pleasing than an exhaust. Someone's sig said "intake sound > exhaust sound" and damn is it true. I just took out a butterfly plate in the TB of my DPFI D15, and removing that small plate alone made such a huge difference in the sound of the intake, it seriously makes me drool even though it's just DPFI

I hope this doesn't make my CRX load. I don't want my car really load at all. The exhaust sounds stock but is 2"or2.5" piping and I will be running a Del Sol intake. I have a battery relocation so there is a lot of space and the del sol intake fits nicely and only has one bend.

My SOHC ZC screams at people. I'm running STOCK exhaust with STOCK CAT and STOCK MUFFLER. Nice and quiet out the *** end. But the intake is an AEM short ram, it ******* SCREAMS! I'm probably gonna get a CAI from my brother until it grows a snail.

Actually, turbos tend to have a silencing effect. But I do have to agree that the D16A6 is a loud motor. In fact, the first thing I noticed when I went with all B-series stuff is how mellow the B-series motors sound by comparison. Even my B18C5 sounds apologetic in comparison to my old D16A6 with i/h/e. And my B20Z? Except for the whistle from the AEM, it sounds straight-up like a rental car in comparison to a D16A6. Now the D16A6 was in no way fast. In fact, it was slow as poop. Hell, I lost to a Tercel, an old pushrod V6 Taurus, and (horror of horrors!) a LeBaron with that old motor. And I barely kept up with an automatic V6 Mustang. All bark and no bite would certainly be an apt description. But I can certainly see how some people insist that the D16A6 has more low end/midrange than a B16A. A more aggressive soundtrack tends to create that effect.

I never tracked the car in the CRX. But I DID track it in my old 1988 Civic STD (which was actually a lighter car). With the D16A6 and i/h/e, I ran a best time of 16.6. I don't remember the trap speed. But I think it was in the range of 82-84MPH.

I had my sunroof open yesterday (still ******* cold in oregon) and I floored it going down a on-ramp and got to hear the d16a6 for the first time out in the open. Ive only had the car a few months and only recently put a intake on it and I was very surpised at how loud it was actually. It was easily as loud as my h22a EG.

The more I learn about this motor the more Im loving it. The d16a6/sohc zc gets a huge thumbs up from me.
