Default A/C Removal

I've decided I don't want it, going to take it out tonight.

Just thought I'd ask for some helpful hints, things to watch out for, etc.

Since the search function sucks, can anyone post a link to some site's with some good how-to's? Not only for A/C removal, but anything in general...

Is http://www.cspeedracing.com down?

actually, I was thinking about this a while ago too and a nice member of the board (thanks Chris) sent me the removal info from Acura directly...

you may be able to obtain it from a local dealership, it's actually the installation instructions for the 97-98 Type R's, just do it in reverse order

my scanner is a POS or I'd scan it in for you

How much does the A/C system weigh. Someone once told me the whole thing weighed about 70 pounds. Sounds a little high, i don't think it weighs quite that much, could be wrong though. Thanks.

I think you heard right about the weight. You have to take into consideration the condenser, condenser fan, ac mount, ac, pulleys everything.

It should total around 60 pounds give or take 10lbs

60 lbs??? If the AC really weighs that much I should probably take mine out... I use it to defog the windows more than I do to cool me off.

I'm afraid that my car wouldn't defog without the AC unit... now that's down-right dangerous when it's pouring outside.

I took mine out not only for the weight, but because my engine bay is a lot cleaner and easier to work in now. Basicly just start takeing stuff out and as you go you'll find you need to take out some lines before others for clearance issues. The condenser will pull right out between the front of the car and the radiator if you take out the radiator brackets and tilt it back a bit. A lot of the longer lines are a lot easier to get out from the bottom then the top. The compressor mounting bracket is an engine mount as well, so it needs to stay. that might seem no brainer, but we spent a bit of time calling around and what not to figure that out because that piece weights a good 15 lbs and I would have liked to of gotten rid of it. One thing I never did get sorted was a bridge for where the evaporator is. That thing has to weigh a few lbs, but I cant find a bridge for it, so it is still in there for now so my heat works. My car make a crazy whistleing sound when my heat is on now. If you plan on ever reinstalling or selling you AC, as soon as you get each piece off the car, cover the openings with plastic and tape to keep out moisture. Moisture will make the system infinately harder to charge if you reinstall it.

You'll survive, that's what Rain-X Anti-Fog is for

Ah, so does that mean the majority of '97 ITR's have a difficult time defogging? If the a/c is off (not turned on) there is no refigereant running through the evaperator for it to have any affect right?

I never use my a/c to defog anyway.... if I take the system out will it be any different?

ONce again, anyone have a link to a how-to for this project?

I've already told you where to find the information...it's not going to be online...go to your Acura dealer and ask them for a copy of the installation instructions for the 98 RS and Type R...

It's publication number is BII 19518

Well I did it. Just took my a/c out. I got two questions:

1) THe lines that run through the firewall to the evaporator.... I just plugged them with glad wrap and duct tape. Is this okay?

2) The fan connectors. There are now 2 plugs attatched to the fan that are hanging lose with no place to go. I just taped them up. Will the condenser come on with the radiator fan, will everything still work as normal? I don't have my helms right now so I couldn't look up the schematics.

thnx

Sounds ghetto but yes it will work, Try to stop buy any dealership or bodyshop and they should have a box of plugs that have been removed from a/c lines, or compressor/evaporaters when they replacement parts are shipped to them. You will have to find the right size but they will pop right in.

2) The fan connectors. There are now 2 plugs attatched to the fan that are hanging lose with no place to go. I just taped them up. Will the condenser come on with the radiator fan, will everything still work as normal? I don't have my helms right now so I couldn't look up the schematics.

If you have removed your a/c (which you have) remove the fan on the drivers side of the car and the wiring that runs infront of the radiator and plugs into a harness just next to the radiator cap area. What I did is then take the connector that is now not used and rotated it 180 degrees to it is pointed down and won't fill with water.

Not what the helms said to do with it.

btw, I thought that was just gas in there, that **** is nasty.

Matt- Thanks, I sealed the plugs up good, thought maybe I could still have the function of both fans... well there's a lil more weight
