Rear Main Seal Leak...Or Is It?
Few days ago I started to notice little oil spots on the ground where I usually park. After looking around underneath the car, I found where it drips from. It drips from where the tranny and the engine block meet. However, I also noticed moisture near the passenger side axle. Also another little fact is that this is CLEAN oil. I waited for a drop to form and then I swiped it with my finger. It wasn't normal dirty motor oil, it was relatively clean. I did an oil change about 2200 miles ago and I did another one tonight.
At first I thought the rear main seal decided to give, but now that I see that the oil dripping is clean, I don't know what to think.
Any suggestions? I'm stumped. TIA

Yea, but if that was the case don't you think the leaking oil would be the normal, dirty, dark color of oil? This was like I just opened a new bottle of oil kind of clean.
I let a drip form where its dripping from and swiped it with my finger and it was clean. I swiped the ground where it was dripping and again, it was clean oil.

the oil leaking from the Engine Rear Main Seal is pretty clean, because is doesnt pass for any dirty part of the engine... and im having the same leak, and its pretty clean too.
i have the same problem dont mean to jack your thread but yea where my tranny meets the block i see little droplets ready to fall.. i dont know if its coming from the tranny or w/e.. if i get pics of my problem please help me out in this thread.. which could potentially help him too! thanks!
rear main is a possiblility. so is the Dist. O-ring, the VC gasket, the vtec solenoid (if app.), and the oil pan gasket.
prob. the best thing to do to narrow it down is to get the engine bay good and clean and then look for leaking. also monitor your oil level as often as possible.

Rear main looks like a cam seal, or like a crank seal, but with a bigger diameter, have to remove tranny, clutch & flywheel...so if ur gonnna change..upgrade those things also..if u want while the tranny is out...
I don't see how oil leaking from the rear main seal can be clean. That doesn't make any sense.
However, it would make sense that cleaner oil would drop from the transmission. I replaced one of the bearings in my transmission back in August and I didn't change that oil seal that sits next to it. I have a feeling its the oil seal in the tranny thats bad.
Either way, the tranny has to come off. So we'll see what happens when the weather gets warmer.
