aftermarket tach for my Std.?
I was wondering what a good aftermarket tachometer would be for my EF. Before you say it, i do not want to swap out the guage cluster, i wanna keep it stock, and just put an aftermarket tach on the side of it.
Does anyone know a good one that doesn't jump all over the place and is easy to hook up? I have seen one in my gf's dad's mustang but it bounces insanely and is impossible to look at!
I was looking at this one from summit: http://store.summitracing.com/...h.asp

:/ that one only goes to 8,000 RPM, so I don't see any reason to do it. I would try to find one with higher numbers on it, for if you ever upgrade or something.

Autoguage 5" tach. Nice and cheap, and accurate. If you want to spend a little more, get the memory version. My brother and I use both and they work perfectly.

Imo just like the Elise cluster its a pain in the *** for a daily.
For a race car its awesome but street car its silly 99% of the time you shift lower then 3K.

Unless your capable of revving over 8k. I like the stack, but could see the difficulty of everyday driving.
Are there any small 10k tachs that can be mounted somewhat discreetly? Maybe directly in front of hte stock tach somehow? Other than buy an ITR cluster/si cluster there aren't too many "sleeper" (not big and obvious) options.

I have an aftermarket tach that I was going to use on another car, but now I'm looking to put it on my '89 Civic std. Is there an RPM source in the gauge cluster to hook up the tach? Or do I have to run it under the hood? Is there a convenient RPM source under the hood for diagnostic purposes that I could use?

There is indeed an RPM source in the gauge cluster harness. Can't exactly remember the color offa the top of my head, but I spliced into it when doing a SiR cluster conversion. I'll get back to you on that.
And under the hood? Yeah...get one of those things that you clip to the spark plug wire that tells you the RPM for diagnostic purposes. Forgot what that's called offa the top of my head too lol. I used one back when I was working in a shop.
