It is true and it applies to anyone falling with in a specific vin range! They wont just give you the parts, you would need to have them installed.

you guys know why they do this right?

it means they found a defect and instead of doing a recall which would be pointless by now. they give freebies and fix the **** while the car is there. but they never tell the customer about it. take pics of your car before and check it after and you will see.

Thank you VTEC181

I got this letter two weeks ago. I filed it away thinking it was for my Accord.

You are right, it is for the Civic and it is free (not that is any consellation). I just have to bring in my Civic and they will replace anything emission ( I stress emission ) related that is defective. This includes spark plugs and wires ( I assume rotor and cat but it was not mentioned in the letter) cat, muffler etc. The campaign letter I recieved list only my vin. Doesnt say what year or models qualify.

Not sure how my situation will unfold though. When I purchased my 96 Civic EX manual with 75K, it had problems; head gasket leak, water pump broken, and a spark plug stuck in the hole were the worst. Since it is my commuter car, I replaced radiator, water temp sensor, timing belt, water pump, crank and cam seals, spark plugs and wires, distributor cap and rotor, primary O2 sensor, gas filter, front struts and cleaned IACV. Couldn't think what else to change. As such, I will send them all my parts bill and see what they will compensate me for.

This is a California issue smog issue. The California Air Resoursce Board started sometimein 1994. Their job it to keep the air clean (sort of speaking). I have a feeling this is related to the O2 sensors failing prematurely. Mine is a 4 wire sensor. This should last at least 100K. The original only lasted 75K that I know of. My secondary O2 is also defective from what I can tell. In either case, my CEL never came on.

My new sensor is arriving today from OxygenSensor.com who had the cheapest rate for a Denso in the USA. I guess Hondas have a difficult time in California. My Accord had similar problems. I had a primary sensor and a cat that failed at 60K. Fought with Honda to get it replaced free of charge.

I will take my Civic in next week. I will mark all major emission parts and see what gets changed...will keep you posted.

I had this service done to my 97 Civic EX back in November of last year when I went in for an oil change. I didn't know anything about it, but the dealer hooked me up. I spent an hour there tops while they did this...got the oil change done for free as well!
