Ok, has anyone had to pay (or had insurance pay) for refinishing the rear bumper cover? Just paint - not having it actually replaced. If so, could you please let me know about how much this cost at a dealer body shop?

One of my coworker's cars rolled into a '01 TL, scraping a quarter-sized piece of paint out (no obvious dents or other damage to the bumper cover). Estimate is for refinishing, not repair:

(description followed by labor hours)
- remove/reinstall bumper cover - 1.9 labor
- repair bumper cover - 1.5 labor, 3.0 paint
- add for clear coat - 1.2 paint
- waste removal - $5
- flex additive - $5

Body labor - 3.4hr x $40 = $136
paint labor - 4.2hr x $40 = $168
paint mater. - 4.2hr x $24 = $100.80
parts/misc - $5

Total = $415.13


Just to repaint the fuggin' bumper - is that right?!?

 

Dude...I can get a bumper repainted for $200-300 without all those trash talking.

 

I have heard of places where you can get the whole car painted for $200-$300 but of course that is a shitty paint job. However no it shouldn't cost $400+ to get a bumber repainted...

 

There's your problem...almost 2 hours to remove and reinstall a bumper...??? It can't take that long...but the $$$per hour that you're getting are really, really cheap...out here it's a lot more.

I would personally take the bumper off and take it up there...That way you wouldn't have to leave your car w/them and you save on labor...

I had my bumper repainted as someone rear-ended me and it was $257.xx. the estimate you gave seems way high!!

I'll post the labor hours when I get home.

 

Said coworker's car, a Mazda Protege, rolled into an Acura TL belonging to a third party. She showed me the estimate and axed my opinion. I've never had a bumper refinished (they usually just get tore up), so I'm asking about the cost.

The info I'd really like would come from:

1. People who have had their rear bumper repainted (not replaced)
2. Yeah, that's about it.

i got my car shaved free of emblems and keyholes (which involves labor of removing the part, welding/bondoing it, repainting, and putting it back on) for $400!

 

I had something similar happen to my front lip... Despite the small area of damage, they will most likely sand, prep, paint the entire bumper. Sounds like a lot, but not too surprising.

 

I work for a body shop as an estimator and the times listed, whether it takes that long to do or not, are straight book times that are set as a national average. Maybe it takes that long to do, maybe it takes longer, thats up to the tech. But from looking at what you wrote that looks about right. Of course it seems expensive, but shop owners aren't in the business to break even or loose money. The only part that can be debated is the repair time, it could be a little steep, but hard to tell without seeing it.

Dude, you'd have to have one finger on each hand to take 1.9 hours to remove and reinstall the bumper. I can remove it in less than 5 minutes easy.

 

A realistic estimate nonetheless though the breakdown of cost seems suspect.
When my wife's Altima got rear ended, just a minor scratch, about a size of nickel due to the license plate bolt of the other car. The insurance paid us over $600.

I was like WTF? Guess what I did, bought touch up paint and took my time and applied one thin layer at a time, buffed it, and you can't even tell unless you really look for it.

 

I had the rear bumper om my R repainted (little old lady scuffed it) and it was around 400$ for the total repairs...
So that isn't too far off.
Also, they tend to over-estimate a bit to cover any potential problems that may occur (broken fasteners etc.)

 

Dayum. That's what we figure the owner of the TL is going to do (Barb - coworker - said the lady was a biatch). But it sucks that her ins. is going to have to pay that much. Ahwell.

 

When I installed my OEM body kit, it took me well over an hour "attempting to remove" the front bumper. I just decided to jack it up and installed the front lip with the bumper on. But then again, I am not experienced in body work by any means.

 

You'd probably be a bit of a bitch too it someone just stumped your bumper! But anyway, what's the problem? You get an estimate and submit to the ins co. They have numbers on what it should cost, and if it's out of range, the WILL let you know. Otherwise, they pay it and it's all done. Don't worry - the ins co w/take care of itself.

 

and also at $40/hour labor is cheap.
Here in Ca, they go $60-$80 per hour.

 

OK, I found my invoice for the repairs

Labor Paint 2.8 hrs @34.00 = 95.20
Labor Body 2.5 hrs @34.00 = 85.00
Paint/material = 50.00
Total +misc = $251.00

Granted Labor at 34/hr is pretty cheap but it looks like your time estimate is high. Just a note, this the shop I used did a great job!!! And they did it right the first time!!

 

you probably get the idea but no harm in contributing to the tally....

I had my bumper estimated not too long ago from this place that's usually overpriced... their estimate was about 315....

 

My mom just got damage on her '01 CL rear bumper, big scuff mark, took the paint off. Anyrate, the body shop here (In Cali) estimated in the Mid-400's to fix it. Good thing was her insurance company considers it under comprehensive, rather than collision, so the deductable was only 50 bucks...

Seems high, but it's really about right...

i got my front bumper and type w lip painted, emblems and integra words shaved... all for $150 and if it ever chips i can take it back to get repainted....
