Default 120k tune up

Hey all,

Just wanted to know if its worth it to get my 98 GSR tuned up for bout $350 at the local Honda shop? Does anyone know exactly what it consists of and if I can do it myself?

Thanks
Nate

do the 90k service if it hasn't been done yet.

major - timing belt, waterpump, valve adjustment

along with a 15k tuneup - sparkplugs, oil change, coolant flush, tranny fluid, brakes bleed ect.....all the systems.

The 90k or 120k will never include the timing belt&water pump in it. These are always seperate repair/maintenance schedule work. $350? Is this a factory Honda or these small repair shops?

This will be what I would look for on a 120k:

Tune up: dis. cap&rotor, air filter, fuel filter, valve adjustment, spark plugs.
Replace all fluids
Check and adjust the other little things.

My timing belt replacement costs $360. If that's included in your tune up, go for it! I'm also getting cam gears for them to throw in too, but no extra cost in labor.

That's true. But on the bright side, your car will be running at its best when the engine is in order. I would have a nice pair of cams right now if it weren't for maintenance items.

This is a Reputable Honda Shop. The only reason I am thinking twice about taking it there is because my friends work at toyota and Mazda dealers. They told me that I have a small chance of anything actually being done to that car besides the oil change and tir rotation. "They'll park it around back and wait til 6pm to call ya." Probably true.

And no it dosent contain the timing belt and water pump. I figure maybe I should do the tune up myself and save for a clutch or something, any ideas?

Oh yeah, forgot to mention. Since your car is a GSR, I highly doubt they will replace the spark plugs because those cost like $15-$17 EACH.

I am pretty sure that the Acura Emissions Extended warranty covers the 98's too. My 97 GSR is due for the 90K and I am going to use the Emissions Warranty to cover the Plugs, Dist. Cap, and other smaller items. Check it out at a Acura shop. They will be able to tell you if your car is covered.

Spark plugs are expensive for a GSR.
I was quoted by Acura at $19 a plug.
At Kragen i was quoted at $20 a plug.

This is for the NGK gold series tho.

You DO NOT want the cheap stuff at your local auto part store. Anyone with knowledge can you tell you that NGK is the best spark plugs for your Honda and Acuras. This is the price you pay for owning a GSR, but it's only like once every 5 years or 60k miles. I can guarantee you will have problems putting the cheap crap spark plugs in your gsr.

You might also want to replace the spark plug wires at the same time since you have so many miles already. $48 oem from ahmotor.com

Try ahmotor.com, they sell all Honda and Acura OEM parts and their prices are usually much cheaper then dealership prices.
