What can I do b/c of a stripped motor mount bolt hole? I can tighten the bolt as tight as I can with my hand but once I put a wrench on it to tighten the bolt all the way the bolt lossens up. Could I put some kind of thread lock on the bolt and that will hold the bolt in tight enough? Is there enough metal that I could tap the hole to a 13mm diam. bolt? Any suggestions will be great.

 

Well it would help if you mentioned which motor mount your having trouble with, other wise I suggest just running a new bolt through the hole and adding a nut to it. I am ssuming it is the timing belt side mount? if so then this will work fine.

 

It is the side mount on the tranny.

 

Go to parts store & get a helicoil kit. It basically rethreads the hole for you. Next time get a tap set & don't force steel bolts into aluminum

 

either that or you could `drill it slightly bigger & rethread it

 

hey george i just had to deal with this on my new motor(drivers side mount)... advance sells helicoil kits but i believe that they dont have one big enough... i just took mine to a machine shop and paid $35 for both holes... i dont know if you have that option but if you do then i would suggest that... if not then try and find a tap set and use that... bolts you can find at Ace hardware... also make sure you use a coarse thread as it will last longer than fine thread... good luck bro!!

I was in a class last year at school and we used taps and I have the same teacher again this year so tom. I'm going to see if he will let me barrow one of the schools taps.

i had the same problem.. except for me the nut that is welded to the chassis on the other side was broken off.. if that's the case with you your only choice may be to weld the mount to the chassis..

 

Tap and die sets are the way to go, or you could push the bolt through and put a nut on the opposite side and weld it to the underside. Either way will work, goodluck on that

 

just like Mugencrxsir1 and everyone else said, just drill and tap it out. Broken/stripped tranny mount bolt holes are common on honda trannies these days i had the hole get stripped in my rear trans mount and that was a pain the way its designed. Thanbk god it was the hole for the stock d-series casue when i put my b-series back in i did not have to worry anymore Aluminum is soft and taps/drills easy, just make sure u drill straight and have the tap straight in the hole. good luck bro

 

i recieved my block with a stirpped bolt hole... but its one that bolts the tranny to the engine block...its the on on the top right i started to tighten it and it never tightened ... it just spun and then a lot of swearing because i just bought the motor off my friend and he said nothign about that being stripped.

can this be fixed without taking the tranny off... or is it not a big deal right now... ? b18a1

 

If you have access or know of your machine shop that can do Time-Sert type rethreading kits. That is the best way to go. Helicoils are weaker and Time-Sert is the stronger way to fix it.

What the Time-Sert does is drills a hole bigger than the original hole thread. Then it threads in a new "sleeved" thread. Its kind of like Sleeving a block, but instead, your inserting a sleeved cylinder with threads on the inner part for your bolt.

They make them for certain kits. I believe in mount bolts and we use the TimeSert for the Head Stud kit.

The kit is pretty expensive so if you just use it one time, its best to just go to a machine shop and get it done.

 

I was thinking today about the size of the tap and the space there is to work in. How do you guys get enough space to turn the tap before the handles of the tap hit the chassis or some part on the engine? Also what size tap should I use (13mm)? are there taps that can be used as a screw driver attachment(for the screw drivers that have the different interchangeable sizes of flat and philups head bites)?
