NASA VIR Enduro - Awesome Fun
One of the most fun races I have EVER been in. The first 30 minutes were pure mayham with CMC/944 cars starting before us. The accord, 6 spec E30s, Erics SE-R were all caught in a "sprint race" within the enduro. The accord was the best handling out of them all, but just didn't have the motor or braking ability they did. That made life difficult for us because about the only corners we could pass them in was south bend and into oaktree. We were all in the same class as well, E2.
All in all, with 15 cars in E2, we finished in 3rd place and I think 13th out of 55 overall.
Our class included the spec E30s, Miatas, ITA and H4 cars.
All we did was change the oil in the accord and hollow out the filler neck flapper, even ran on last years tires, a mix of kumhos and hoosiers. I really don't know why more people don't race these cars. 230k + miles and running strong.

People at Honda would be proud to know this car's history and performance! That sled does handle well! (well driven too, Cory!)
We had a blast too! Scott Fredricksen, my co driver did an awsome job. Scott did the last 2+hrs and I did the first hour+. We worked traffic well and were easy on the equipment. The traffic in the first 30 minutes of the enduro was quite a challenge! Scott and I have been sharing race cars in sprints & enduros for nearly 10 years with only one DNF.
A big thanks to Will Harris's pit work! He's efficient and flawless...and an all-around good guy! Thanks to Chad Slagg and the Whitts for lending a hand with our stops too. Thanks to Jason and Tammy for sharing their Tahj-ma-trailer with me Thursday night!
...and I thououghly enjoyed not having to add a DROP of oil to my car for the entire 3-day weekend! (last years motor burned more than 1 quart per hr , I rebuilt this winter).
If I read the lap sheets right, Franza's official VIR H2 full course fast lap may have been busted with a 2:15.2
. I think Jason claims a high 2:14, but I'm not sure if it's official? Jason?

My intermediate student was in a LX/EX "hybrid" and it was not bad at all. It felt more stable in the corners than the Integra and hatchbacks (from the passenger seat).

That was fun. Good weekend, but miserably cold on saturday and sunday. The enduro was a blast. An hour and half is a long time to be out there, and I don't think the car would have stayed out much longer. I had to nurse a corded tire for the last 30 minutes. What I wouldn't do for LSD in the Accord. That car is so easy to drive, it's almost boring

LOL, HC's never run a full course sprint at VIR
That's pretty fast, nonetheless. The quickest I was able to run in the H2 car was in fact a 2:14.8, but obviously it can't be deemed "official".
That said, the quickest I went in the new H1 car was 2:16.3, so you beat that
Everybody's getting faster and it's very cool to see

is this Al? i think you were referring to me. you mean, more stable in the dry, heh. i gotta work on the 'wet' setup.
good job corey/warren. i could have swore i seen 24 cars listed in E2 on that list at timing and scoring. i'm not sure if that including the sprint cars as well though. it looked like you were having a nice battle with those two spec e30s early in the race. the green one, and a white/blue one i think
oh, if anyone has footage of me spinning in the snake, i'd like to see it heh. i have a little footage of the corey's accord, and karl's accord at the roller coaster. i wish i could have got more, but the track and classroom sessions come up so quick there's hardly time to get anything.

True, HC has not, but NASA MA has included HC cars in it's pre-enduro sprint each Feb. You did your 'officially timed' 2:15.9 during that event in '04. You were on Hoosiers and ambient temps were in the upper 50s.
I know...because it's been my bogey ever since you nailed it!

Again, congrats.
Edit-

Definatly a great time, do we really have to wait until next year to do it again.
Congrats to Shane, his first time at VIR and his first competition race. and he ended up less than a second off my 2:24. Hopefully with some more track time he can bust that, I hope to.
The Hankook C30s wear like hardened steel. Four tires would have easily made it through the RRR double school that Shane did last week and the enduro,, twice. We dont have a duromoter or depth gauge, but neither seemed to change from the start to finish of the race. The rears do take some time to get any heat in them, but I did try, tankslappin and spinning going up the esses helps rear tire temps but not my confidence. Car felt twitchy the whole time there, it will be getting a very intensive look over for bent and torn suspension parts. But hopefully all she needs is an alignment.
Anyways, much thanks to the workers, crew, and drivers for the incredibly fun event. I cant wait for next year.

I had those on my car for the weekend, and I really dont like them. The C50's were pretty nice, but these are pretty miserable for race tires. They did well for the school and instructing and I'll use them for instructing a few weekends this year but thats it.

It seemed like something was a little iffy.. I could tell your car was at the limit when you were driving it, and I thought it should have more grip. I was on George's HPDE takeoff toyos with about 30 heat cycles on them for the first 2 days.

I used a set of GK's old toyo HPDE tires last year and they felt quite a bit better than the hankooks
No wonder the SM guys dont like them.
V710's soon though! Watch out

When sorting out a new car, It's wise to pay attention to what the hot shoe in the class (Franza in H2) is doing

Tales of a Rookie Enduro Crew Chief (with two Enduro Rookie Drivers)
Well, I got my first taste of enduros this weekend as the crew chief for the Schooled Racing #101 Miata in E2. The drivers were both regular SM drivers with NASA and SCCA. This was thier first enduro with driver changes.
I will say right now, that we had FUN! Unofficially we ended up 13th in E2 and 25th overall. Not bad for the first crack at it and a car that I think is a little tired in the engine department.
It was a great learning experience as we had almost no clue as to what we were doing. The rest of the crew was assembled using "non-racer" types. Here are some of the things we learned...
1) A Miata could acutally go the distance on one stop...and that is what we would have done, if the paranoid driver would have not pitted 10 minutes earlier than we needed him to...only to find out that there was over a gallon and a half left in the car. This of course meant that we needed one more stop for a "splash" at the end. Ultimately it cost of a couple of positions.
2) Those new center vent "safer for morons" gas cans suck for refueling. I did not think they would ever empty. That alone cost us a few positions. I told the car owner that the number one purchase for next year on his list should be "proper" gas cans...
3) The cheap GMRS radio setups are OK for the pits talking to the driver, but are total crap for the driver calling the pits. The real problem (besides all the noise in the car) was that the PTT button was on the earbud/mic cord for the driver. This limited the opportunities for the driver to be able to call back to the pits since he would be one-handing it. We made it work "good enough" in the end, but it was far from ideal.
4) Enduros are FUN! We were never a contender, so no hopes there. But we did have some close racing back where we were at. We finished only 20 seconds in front of the next car in class.
I think they are going to gear up for next year...

From the vid, it kind of looks like he couldn't brake in time for the left hander into the top of roller-coaster...so he headed straight for the top of roller coaster (through the grass), but lost it at re-entry onto the tarmac
