I got some of the Pioneer 4 way speakers and they sounded really nice, the thing is, if you really want the best sound out of aftermarket speakers u need to buy a four chanel amp. Trust me it makes a huge difference because any typical head unit will not push enough watts into what a aftermarket speaker can handle

Typical head units push about 45 watts per channel or shall I say speaker, while after market speakers can use up to 300 watts so theres a definite difference, the thing is I remember one of the techs at bestbuy talking to me about the rms rating having something to do with it also, im not too sure about that thing but im definitely sure head units cannot push the amount of watts of what an amp can do to a aftermarket speaker
You are correct most "high power" HUs" will have about 4x20W RMS into 4 ohms or less, and off board 4ch amps start at about 4x25W RMS into 4 ohms, but most aftermarket speakers are not 300W but closer to 50W - 100W EG: Alpine Type X 75W, JL Audio ZRs 85W and Infinity Kappa Perfect 6.1 100W, these are "RMS" or continuous power handling.
I run an Alpine HU, and four 6.5" 2way Eclipse speakers in my 94 LS, And I would be willing to bet if you heard it you would want to know where I have the amp and even where I have the sub hidden.

Diamond audio makes some great coaxials for about 150/pr retail. Very full sounding.
Alpine makes a great speaker for the money (type s) for ~ 100/pr retail. Lots of midbass.
Bostons are nice too, but a little pricey @ 250/pr retail. Very crisp high end, not as much mid bass as the others ^
Edit:
1) Don't listen to best buy employess, most of them don't know **** about car audio.
2) Eclipse make great speakers, great clean sound and nice shallow mount

I do not have an "off board" amp, My Alpine CDA-7893 runs my 4 Eclipse 6.5" 2ways, however....
The fronts are mounted to custom MDF speaker housings, [replacing the stock plastic ones] and extensive Dynamating was done.
The rears are mounted in Custom MDF and fiberglass cabinets, [replacing the stock rear speaker mounts] Dynamating was also done in the rear, also the tweeters in the rear speakers are disabled.
All wiring is oem except for about a foot of 16ga speaker wire in each rear cabinet, and about 5 feet of 10ga power wire from the batt. to behind the HU for the HUs constant power, [yellow].
And yes, it sounds very good, no I am not going to win any SPL contests, or shake the ground beneath me, but it's more then loud enough for me, and SQ including bass response is very good as I said.

FCM is right , I see all these people buying all these expensive coaxl's and they run them off the head unit... I have a simialr set-up as FCM a Alpine (9835) high powered headunit but i choose Memphis power referance coaxal's , because they are priced good have lower power rating and are really efficiant .. so i get more clarity and volume out of them , they are cheaper than most other coaxal's and sound better than most IMO especially running of a headunit....

^^^HEY I RESENT THAT! Haha, nah j/k. That is somewhat true though, there is only like one out of the five car fi sales persons that knows anything. If your at best buy and want good info, ask to talk to one of the installers as they tend to know more than the salesperson.
And no I dont work in car fi, I work in Home Theater

More isn't saying much. I stand by my statement, remember that people at best buy are paid hourly, and as such have no reason to attain more knowledge other than to advance up the coporate ladder.
Commision sales people on the other hand, like me, know their ****, cause if we don't our paychecks suffer

I totally agree. The exception though is having a car audio enthusit working in the department. That is the one guy that knows his stuff. He has had previous systems and has dealt with different setups.
But 90% of the time, the salesperson is only going to know enough to make you feel happy and have a good buying experience. Other than that, this what these forums are for and your local car audio shops.

other people may knock em but i like entry level pioneer 2 or 3 ways. they're cheap, efficient, and have nice neutral sound. i've had good luck with them. plus, you can almost always find a pair open-box at best buy, good guys, or circuit city.
fcm - how much of a pain in the *** was it to build those little boxes for the rear speakers? how bout the mdf mounting plates for the front? i have to say, that seems like a brilliant idea that had never occurred to me. you don't happen to have pics of any of this do you? how bout a link to a write up of a similar install?
and on a seperate note, how does your LS feel with that gsr tranny? did it make a big difference? i've been thinking about doing the same thing.

The door speaker housings are no big deal, it's a 2 day job but only because glue and fiberglass resin has to dry, the rear speaker mounts/cabinets will take some time, about a week of solid work, I spent about 3 mo., [a little at a time] doing the front and rear speakers.
Yes the GSR tranny made a huge diff., I also have LS, "Phantom Grip".

I have a 2001 Integra, and I am thinking of doing the same thing. I thought about getting seperates, crossovers, and an amp, but that just seems like too much trouble. Also, I could not find anything on mounting an aftermarket tweeter in the stock location up front.
Anyway, I am looking at the Alpine CDA-9857 (when it comes out in March) and a set of 6.5" Focal CV1's run of the HU. They have a lot of mounting holes, so hopefully they will match up with the factory holes. Focal makes a very quality product, home and car audio.

mounting an aftermarket tweeter in the factory location is EASY! i did it. you know how you can buy a roll of that metal strap with holes in it at the hardware store? i just used some of that, bent it into the shape of a W, with the top of the W against the back of the door panel, and used that to mount the new tweeter. it doesn't make sense now, but i'll take pics eventually to show you. it was really easy, works perfect, looks totally factory, and sounds killer.
