5th gen top speed
why are the accord lx in the 5th gen limited to 115, but the 5th gen accord ex top out at 130 mph. i understand the only difference in the engine is the ex has a vtec head. so does anyone know why honda decided to do that?

there is some speculation on that I have heard that only japanese cars have the govenor, while others claim all have it.

I have seen 125 in mine while I was following my friend in an Infinity SUV back when I was being stupid....damn I was lucky I didn't get a ticket.
Let's put this to rest, just like all the other's like it that unfortunately came before.
All Honda's (at least for the US market) have both Speed and Rev limiters hard programmed into their respective ECM's. This is for not only warranty purposes, but product liability issues as well.
The DX,LX,SE and ValuePack versions are set approx 15mph lower than the EX varient.
I absolutely hate when these threads pop up. It invariably turns into "you're an idiot", "you're infringing on my rights to be an assh...l contest, and I'd wish this would be taken to "General Discussions" where it can turn into the "pis...g contest" it's bound to become.

yea, well, people want to know the top speeds. well, in a vacume, with stock diamter wheels, the 5th gear will be able to spin the wheels upwords of 200mph. however aerodynamic challenges will never make that possible

Yeh, It's like asking your fat Aunt Bertha to move faster in the Mall crowd. Wonderful thing that Wind Resistance; it keeps the ranks of Darwin Award winners at a reasonable level.

do you think it's safe to go that fast in an older accord? there's a reason honda puts governors on their cars... it's to keep poeple from doing somethign stupid because they can't help themselves; so honda will do it for them. take a look at the speed rating on the tires of your car before you decide on setting any land speed records... i remember hearing that the 94/5 ex accords that were built in the ohio plant have no governor's in them. an idiot that i once knew got his EX up to 139mph on the highway chasing a prelude vtec and a v6 maxima. he didn't stand a chance.
i have a 97 accord ex and my speedometer is not accurate. it read higher than actual speed for example
78mph is 75mph acutally. so your 120 is prolly 115. get a gps and test it out

i have a friend that got his 87 accord to over 200 kms, provided it was no longer stock, so that comment about it not being safe to travell that fast, sure you are right but it doesnt meen that nobody is going to try. and the car was handling fine at high speeds.
if you want your car go over 120-130 mph, remove speed limiter. some aftermarket ecu have remove speed limiter feature or u can go to some racing mec shop and let them remove it for u. BUT watch out make sure after u remove speed limiter u have some good tire and brake (some tire can't handle high speed and can blow up at high speed u don't want u tire to blow up when u fly at 160 mph).
you can remove the speed limiter yourself if you know what you're doing. i don't see a point though. 115mph it plenty fast especially for an lx, and 135mph is more than fast on an ex. some cars have governors below 100mph.
Free fall from a C130 cargo hold will get your Honda close to terminal velocity

I'm quite sure there are places much like Kansas and other Midwest states where sustained High speed driving is tolerated, but in most else areas there's precious little space to let loose.
Please let's keep this theoretically. we don't need to contribute to the local salvage yards, now do we...
