A shift meter in my steering wheel

Well i love the way on a Indy/f1 car the lights raise up from green, to yellow to red(shift).. and that extra visual bling sounds like a fun project. I'm all set buying a stack or anything silly and expensive as such..
so I'm making one
Simple led.s, drilled into the steering wheel, or a blaket made when them over lapping if i think the metal removed from the wheel your sacerfice strength.
anyways.. how would i acquire say, 6,000, 5,000, 7,000, 7,500, 8,200 rpm singal so each rpm intervile triggers an light till the next or latter rpm is reached
has to be a simple way, i just need outside perspective...

Instead of trying to give you an electronic education on what it would take to make that happen for you, I suggest an easier method.
Buy an adjustable 4 LED shift light from AXAS then disassemble the housing and implant the lights and the small board inside the steering wheel. Full adjustability and much easier to accomplish.

Buy one.
DEFI VSD Basis
You can get creative in how you install it into your steering wheel. Otherwise, the HUD display would be safer than having to look down at your steering wheel each time you need to shift. F1 cars don't really have a dash, and their open wheel design and and seating position keeps the steering wheel up high, so that's why it's designed in the steering wheel.
The seating position in a Civic, on the otherhand, makes it less than ideal for an LED Tach in the steering wheel.
