what number on the engine vin ?

what number on the engine vin is the year or is there another marking ?

only 96 + have engine Vin #.

And the older engine has serial # which could be trace to exact year/car/Car Vin #.

well my motor has a vin and many other markings. does anyone know what the numbers mean
