cluster gas tank gauage needle came off and won't go back in

is the metal part still attached to the needle? the little metal pin that goes into the cluster, if so then it is broken..... i found on the automatics the needles tend to break and not just pop off...i have no idea why.... if theres a silver needle attached to your gauge needle then it is broken.
