I have a 2000 base prelude with 50K mile on it. I was trying to pass a car yesterday and when VTEC engaged it was sputtering and broke-up, almost like it was misfiring. When I drive normal it drives perfect. Then today I was sitting at a light and it started to sputter again and dropping about 50-70 RPM’s just for a second then would idle fine. I did a full tune-up about two months ago, and I went home and added some oil incase that was the problem but it’s still doing it. Oh and I am throwing no cel’s. It’s probably a damn sensor. Any help would be great. Thanks.

 

Check your O2 sensor.

 

Maybe you just got a bad tank of gas?

 

i have a similar problem however not in Vtec only at idle. I changed o2 and that didnt work. About the only thing i havent changed is my rotor in my distributor.

 

sounds like the same problem i had a few weeks back. all that sputtering and everything finally built up and my crank angle sensor failed. replaced whole dizzy and works fine since. but my ECU has gone bad now. check the Dizzy see if there is alot of play on it.
