Ls/vtec with ls pistons...
Whats up yall....I have a stock 97 ls,and looking to go vtec but i was told an ls/vtec with ls pistons is slow as ****,and i was thinking would b16 pistons make such a diff..?everyone i know says yeah, but i just dont see the point in changing to other oem pistons..?And what head should i buy...?Im looking for around 200 whp,Can it be done with 1.8,stock rods, and just some cams/intake mani/header and valetrain..?Thanks.
If you're looking for 200whp on stock internals, go with P30 (B16) pistons.
The reason is, B16 pistons have a larger 'dome,' thus increasing compression from about 9.6-8:1 with the PR4 (LS) pistons to about 11.5-7:1 with the P30's, depending upon, of course, which head you choose to run.
200whp all motor isn't happening on stock PR4 pistons.

Good luck.

You need to lay off the crack.
In an LSVTEC, you can make more power with P30's or P73's than those piece of crap PCT (CTR) pistons.
Ask any seasoned builder and he'll tell you why.
Hint, it has to do with effective compression on pump gas, and flame travel within the cylinder.
CTR pistons aren't worth it.
If you want more than 11.7:1 compression, use P30's, and mill the head.

PR3's have about the same dome as the JDM ITR pistons and will give you a good compression for pump gas as well

I agree, CTR pistons are crap for an LSvtec, they are heavy and increase lateral stress on the LS rods, and give you a retardedly high compression for pump gas

CTR's, ITR's, or B16's, will do fine, it really depends on goals, desired compression, and what is going to be used to tune.
My best advice is to ask your builder.
200+ has been made many a time utilizing all of the above choices.
Build a solid bottom, and squeeze your power out of your head.

ls/vtec with ls pistons are kinda weak. I have one. Best 1/4 mile I got of it was 14.8 on street tires untuned. Beat alot of gsr civics though

Depends of what car you have it in. If you've got it an an EK coupe, then that time isn't bad.

I am on the yes side of this argument
there is is whole thread about CTR/ PCT pistons about 20 pages long, if someone hasnt read it already i would suggest reading it, it will explain the issuses of undercaming and over caming with theses pistons in an lsvtec

People around here need to lay off the drugs, lately.

I have 2 friends as of this very minute on STOCK LS BLOCKS WITH STOCK LS PISTONS that made about 192-195 on very bone stock blocks. so yes..with stock LS pistons you can make 200 WHP. And both set ups were mildly built heads. Dare me to prove anyone otherwise?
So i'll keep taking drugs and keep the very nice thought of 200 WHP, 12 SEC. ET's on stock blocks in the back of my head thank you very much
Oh and one of them went 12's in an EK coupe, stock block LS, and on a POS DC 2 peice 4-2-1 header.

I assume you have proof?
Because I would REALLY like to see this. 12's in an EK coupe all motor using a stock bottom-end LSVTEC.
Damn, I, as well as many other people here, must be building something wrong when we need over 10:1 compression and big cams to make 200whp and run those kind of times.

Well yeah I shouldnt bash my baby. Has been running strong for 2 years now without a problem even though the block has atleast 190k miles (rebuild coming soon). I have it in a 94 eg dx coupe. I also have a b16 tanny with it.
wow 200hp on stock ls/vtec, there is probably some laughing gas involved in there

I dont have **** on paper..but i have living proof. Milogen Fab here on H-T he used to go by NorxCal did it..in his EK coupe. Another friend of mine thats not on here did it in an EG. Stock block LS vtec's. Its all in your head..and by being an all motor person..you know that. The coupe i believe is getting some b16 piston's as of now..but rest assure he did that with a stock block. and he's only tyring to go faster.

I don't care how well your head flows, with the compression using stock PR4 pistons, you can't utilize big cams as well, thus not making as much power.
I want solid evidence.
