Default I have two choices of available blocks, please advise.

Hi all, this is going to be my first real build so Im trying to be carefull with my choices. Disclaimers aside...

Locally there is a LS block that I should be able to pick up for $200 and a GSR block that I will be able to get for 3-400. I already have a complete B16 head.

Both motors are beyond 100k miles and I will be doing a rebuild. The LS motor will obviously need an LS/Vtec kit which increases the cost of running the LS block.

My question is, which block will be better suited for a 9000 rpm motor? I will be running either P30 or ITR pistons, and will have upgraded my head with cams and valvetrain. I want a good midrange, so thats why the long stroke LS motor is a canidate.

Thanks guys, just dont want to spend and be pissed later.

I read this https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1495823 but it was only kind of helpfull...

I'm guessing this is a street motor? If it's your first motor I'd just go with the GSR block.

GSR block is better suited for high RPM. The 87.2mm stroke is better than the 89mm stroke of the LS, for high RPM. The GSR girdle is a bonus too.

i would just get the ls b16 pistons rings rod bolts and bearings so u have a clean low mileage block that can rev no problem

deff LS block...you get more stroke, and you need that more than some shitty girdle that really won't help you in anyway

I would without a doubt get the GSR block. It has the shorter stroke--you probably won't notice the torque diff. anyway. Its already made to rev to at least 8100, you don't have to worry about buying the vtec line kit, the GSR bearings have the "pyramid" coating on them to retain oil (better for the high piston speeds) you could always get the ls rods notched for the GSR bearings but that just complicates things. If I were doing it, it would be a total no-brainer. GSR all the way.

You can def. run an LS block to high revs and be ok, but Honda had to make sure the GSR could survive 8000 rpm for like 150,000 miles--so they re-engineered alot of the motor.

there's not a single person out ehre with a built/modded engine that's worrying about 150,000 mile reliability.

which is? go with a block that makes less power for the sake of a few thousand more miles of life even thought here's a 99.9% chance you'll never even seen the limits of engines life?

gsr block for sure. youll get better rods/bolts, girdle, oil squirters (since your staying with cast pistons) better bearings, and the shorter stroke will help maintain TQ in higher rpms.

gsr block for 9k revs daily, i keep my lsvtec under 8500 because im not making power higher than 8k , but i can feel the difference in torque and power over a gsr with my p30 pistoned lsV

an LS block for 200 is not that really great of a deal, at least in my area. You can find complete longblocks for around $300.
The GSR block is a better candidate IMO, because it has the block girdle(less flex@ high rpms) and the block webbing is better. Also has piston squirters and like you said, theres no need for a ls/vtec "kit" which cost money too...You could always put an LS crank in the gsrblock too. This is a pretty popular setup and works well...
