California ls/vtec
How many of you are in California and have a ls/vtec. How do you get your car smog checked ? Will a ls/vtec pass smog here in Calif ?
Anything that can be done to a ls/vtec so that it will pass the test ?
Joe

I guess what you guys are saying is that either there aren't any ls/vtec in the whole state of Kalifornia or they are getting the registration # thru the 'non-legit' way.
The ref is an ***.....he will come out with the most detailed engine schematic you have ever seen, if it's not stock it better have a carb eo # or you will get failed, an LS/VTEC WILL NOT PASS SMOG, California really sucks

if ur car is just ls vtec with stock internals, you WILL pass smog. all of my friends including me passed. i didnt need to go to a shady place..just the regular ole texaco down the street. make sure your gas cap passes and make sure that there are no loose vaccum lines and your set.
He may pass the sniffer but he will never get pass the visual. I got failed once because my evap canister was for a Civic and not a Teg, even though all the lines were hooked up and working properly
" ..just the regular ole texaco down the street. " is not THE REF. Even if a dumbass ref misses it, you are still liable to be caught at a roadside emissions station. If you get caught, DEAL with it...or play legit and build accordingly.
Actually, I would do it the other way around. I would do a California B16A first, get your ref sticker, and then do the bottom end. If you get a B18A/B18B swap done first and get the ref sticker, you will fail your biennial smog inspections for sure since it will be obvious you have made changes. Remember, the B16A head and emissions configuration is alot different from the LS. On the other hand, if you go B16A first, you will be retaining the same head and emissions configuration. A different block is MUCH less likely to raise a red flag during a biennial smog inspection than a different head and emissions configuration.
As for a B18C1 swap, this is perfectly legal in California provided the engine is a California emissions engine (no JDM or Federal engines!), it is the same year or newer than the car it is going into, and you retain the emissions equipment that came with the engine. Use the manifolds and ECU from the engine you are swapping in. DO NOT try to use a 1G B16A ECU (PR3/PW0) to simplify wiring, as this is most definitely not legal. It will also be quite obvious to the tester since you will be lacking a four wire oxygen sensor (he will see two single wire oxygen sensors staring at him RIGHT IN THE FACE) AND the check engine light operates differently with the newer ECUs. But you can get away with using a cat, evap canister, etc. from the car you are swapping into.

Hi Del ... luded,
What do you mean "build accordingly" ?
The reason that I am asking is that when I ask the mod shops here in so cal that does ls/vtec they all can not guarantee that ls/vtec will pass the smog without any problem.
How about if I do a engine swap of USDM b18c1 into my 1991 Integra LS ? Will I pass the smog visual and emission ?
thanks,
Joe

deluded. hes asking if he can pass smog in ca. the answer is yes he can. just make sure all your stuff is hooked up right and dont sweat it. or you can come down to SD. i can show you to a shop that dont car about your visaul..just as long as you pass.
man, ive been to several smog places and gotten pre tests done and every one of them took one look in my compartment and said no way. Im even talking about "the texaco down the street." where are you guys finding these places? also, about having the b16 reffed first, are we talking about a del sol b16 or sir b16, cause i dont think theres a ref in ca who will pass an sir b16.
