Default 98 I4 Auto Transmission Slipping

I have a 98 I4 sedan that has been giving me some concern over the tranny. For the past few months, the tranny has been slipping slightly when it shifts to second and more when shifting to third. However, this only occurs when the car is cold. After driving a few minutes (approx 10) there is absolutely no slipping.
I performed a drain and fill of tranny fluid and recently also did a DIY tranny flush with little effect on the slipping.
Any ideas what the problem is? Can the tranny be saved or is a new one in line?
TIA for any help

unfortunately you got a clog in your filter and you are going to have to take the trans apart to see why it's clogged. Most likely something is starting to fail in the trans and it will quit working on you soon enough.

Please forgive my lack of knowledge with trannies, but it sounds like you're saying this is something that can be fixed...is this correct? Obviously taking a tranny apart isn't easy buy I'm hoping that the problem is something that can be fixed instead of something that requires me to buy a different tranny.

What goes in to treating the filter clogging problem?

Personally, even though it's out of warranty, i'd take it to the dealer. Honda like many other dealers has a goodwill policy. 6th gen auto transmissions are notorious for failures, and if you explain the problem and you have a good history with Honda, they may do necessary repairs under the Service Bulletin for you. Or at least you'll get it diagnosed...

I'm on my 2nd tranny right now....

Definately good advice I didn't know there was a Service Bulletin for 98 auto trannies though

Honda extended its warrenty on 00 accord trannies to 100k 7 years
i jsut took my 00 accord to honda i have the same problem w/ my tranny they didnt do a drive test so i have to go back in and show then what the car does.
Go to your local honda dealer and set up an app Its free for them to do tests. Then they will tell you whats wrong and may cover all off the repairs costs If not call the Nation wide Honda or i dont know what they are called but try

I dont know exactly what years it covers, I know it covers 2000 though...it may be 00-01 trannies only, but I know several people who have been helped with repairs because of Goodwill and the service bulletin.

I can't guarantee results, but I can definitely say that the dealerships most likely see this more than once in a while and may help...

that's a 2000 Accord....

a 98 accord is out of that warranty.

I also got the transmission replaced free on my 2000.

Either way, I'm at 150k on the clock so the warranty is most likely out of the question.

what happens is as the clutch packs degrade, they clog the filter, if you fix it now, you most likely will only pay about 1.8 to 2K wait any longer and it will cause failure of the hard parts in the trans and that will get you over 3K. I would not recommend a used trans 'cause they are crap for the 6th gen cars

Damn!
That's a lot of money! If I'm going to throw that kind of money at the car, wouldn't it make more sense to buy a used manual tranny and the needed parts and swap it over?
$1000 in parts and $1000 in labor would probably cover the costs of a swap wouldn't it?

I too have a tranny symptom, so it seems. I have religiuously changed the fluid every 10k miles, have done an Auto-Rx treatment which worked extremely well but recently the tranny has been shifting hard from 1st- 2nd after that everything is smooth. I am going to attach an inline filter from Magnefine and add a cooler, but one thing i suspect is that since i have 10k on the engine oil and the filter wasnt made to go pass 4kor 5k. would that be the problem why after the engine is reviving very long going in tnto 2nd and gets a jerk, could the engine be the problem. I have Mobil 1 EP 5w-30 in there and its a 02 Accord dx with 60k miles. Any suggestions?

if your car is jerking in 2nd when it is cold, it won't be long before the trans quits. You need to have it inspected. The problems you describe are the first signs of trans failure.....

Thats exactly what I had before I switched over to a free new transmission care of Honda America...definitely get it looked at or it might fail on you at any moment...it would be awful to lose power on a freeway...

Honda extended the Automatic Transmission warranty to 100,000 miles for owners of record for certain 2000 and 2001 Accords and Odysseys.
Honda has been reviewing (and offering partial participation) '98 and '99 Accord Transmission issues on a one by one basis. They are insisting on maintenance records and any documentation of prior related repairs.
These are considered Good-will Policy Adjustments, since this doesn't rise to the litmus test of a Safety Recall.
It may very well be worth a phone call to your local Honda Dealer.
