Valve spring retainer keepers are sticky to remove / searched
I am replacing valve seals on a F22a head off the engine and after trying both types of spring compressors the retainer/keepers do not want to stop moving with the valve. I have removed all exhaust valves no problem but the intake side is a pain in the ****. I have one removed but the rest seem to be stuck.
I have used lithium grease and deep creap to try to penetrate and loosen up.
Does anyone have any secrets or experience with sticky keepers. I have already searched but may have overlooked since most were on B16's or whatnot.
Any timely help will be appreciative. Please no flamers.

Ok so I wasn't sure but with the normal compressor the one that doesn't holt the valve from the bottom, I was cautious to do this but if you compress the spring and push down so the valve comes out the bottom a little and whacked it every so gently with a rubber mallet/dead blow. I tried this last night but didn't want to do it. Anyway that worked and did not appear to ruin the valve. I will take measurements to be sure. It did not take much force to do it this way.
Just checking if this is a way others have had to go on a well used engine.

Are you doing this with the head still in the engine?
If it is, you need an air compressor and an air adapter in the spark plug hole to hold the valve up so when you compress the spring, the valve stem is still sticking up.
Then just use a magnetic pick up tool to pick up the keepers.

Take a deep socket the same diameter as the spring retainer, place it over the top of the offending retainer and tap it with a metric hammer. It shock should be enough to unseat the split keepers so that you can fish them out with a magnetic pencil (etc).

you could always try a punch and some very light blows...
although I'd inspect them carefully afterwards...
or try some PB blaster... that has helped me with a couple sticky ones I've encountered...

Please read the first sentence of the first post for your answer. Not very helpful.
P What exactly would a metric hammer look like? Just curious. But advice worth looking into, especially on the intake side where the head bolt hole is. Not alot of room to work around.
Like my second post says I had very good luck with the rubber mallet tapping on the valve with the spring compressed and pushed down.
I have 3 left but only get about 10-20 minutes every couple days to work on this. That is what 15 hour days do to you. Plus I have been taking my time and making sure everything is clean and spec'd out.
Otherwise thanks for the help.

Ooops, I misread.
I know what you mean when you work 15 hour days.
That's probably how I missed that one.
Good luck.

Still at a stronghold due to work restrictions. Off subject a guy said he'd give me a B16 with tranny if I'd swap an engine for him. Not a bad deal.
I rented a tool that holds from top and bottom and maybe it didn't have the right retainer holder because it didn't work worth a ****.
Anyhow I am planning on spending time today but maybe another question can get answered.
Is it worth 35.00 to have a shop soak this head in cleaner to get all residue off as spray can carb cleaner and little brushes don't seem to get enough clean.
I am not looking for perfection but the cleaner it is before reinstall the better.
Thanks

Another moethod that has worked for me... is to take a smaller (well, medium sized) metal hammer and smack the edges of the retainers on each half of the keepers.... it should make a metallic resonating noise... smack it until that noise goes away and the springs starts to bounce the hammer...
I have successfully removed all. I hope the install is less troublesome. Maybe if I can get some solid time to do it it will not take very long.
I preferred the method I used. Although I did try some others.
But if you compress spring and can hold down so the valve sticks out the bottom. It did not take that much pressure, thumb in the intake/exhaust port and two fingers to hold compressor. Then just tap the valve about two or three times with dead blow. I used a rubber mallet as that is my weapon of choice. Just be sure to have a back drop or cardboard or something as when you tap the valves the keepers may pop out and them little bastards are hard to keep up with when they go flying.
Otherwise everything is cool. Appreciate some of the responses.
