Default mid engine CRX

I figured if I am going to do all this work, I might as well add some horsepower >;o)

I love turbo, can't live without it, so I used an 86 Maxima ft end and bolted an 87 300 ZX turbo motor up to it and fitted it under the smallest car I could find , an 87 CRX
Hope you like it

I have had some of my cars get ' light' at speed so I paid particular attention to front down force, remember, wieght balance is a static mesurement, down force works with speed, so I used the incoming air to cool the air, slowed the air down with a fan shroud to collect heat in a timely manner and vented the air through the hood, just ahead of the shock towers to aviod wind seperation problems at the winshield

I used the gas tank as the front spoiler behind the radiater

The air from the roof scoop is for the intercooler and the oil cooler tucked in behin the eng

I used the stock 300zx radiater in the front and I pay great attention to the benifits of a good oil cooler

this just shows where the future sheet metal work will go

hiding the radiater under the sheet metal was kind of a trick

I will put a steering brake to the rear wheels after the ajustable porportion valve
It is a big suprise when you do a burn out and the front wheels leave the ground after about a 20 yard burn, dragsters learned long ago to have rear disc brakes and just ' touch' them nder power and it will straighten the car out

Hope ya like it

Awesome... another mid-engine RWD conversion! I love it! Post some full size pics and write-up if you can.

Bill, You can host the pics right off your home page site:

and put any caption you like with it.

maybe its because I am still a trial member but I dont seem to be able to use my website pic's for this site, I would like to chat with you about solving some problems with the car , for instance, your thoughts on the camber you put into the rear alignment, and the placement of the instant center you put into the rear trailing arms, are you concerned with brake hop? If you have already adressed all these issues, I apoligize, but your intellegent posts get a little buried in all the ' noise' being posted around yours >;o) and it's hard to find what I am looking for.
I dont want to be a jerk, but I am a little concerned for your safety with your gastank design.............I am not disagreeing with you , only a safety concern, and I wonder how your static wieght distribution will work in real world driving.
BTW I have had occasion to lift the ft wheels off the ground and have learned the importance of proper brake managemant ( left hand turn under power with the front wheels off the ground).........and also I have had lift problems at speed when the ft end gets light........so I put great emphasis on air management on the front end down force after the air cools the radiater.....I will take some more pic's of how I put these things in if your intrested..

thanx for reading my rambling >;o)

You should be able to find the answers to most of your questions on My Homepage without any of the "noise" (which is music to my ears, btw ). There are sections on suspension geometry and weight distribution you might find helpful.

I'm a little concerned with my fuel tank safety also. I've done everything I can think of to minimize the risk, but I also understand the vulnerablability to side impacts. I got the idea from this project: Grabercars.com - Home of 'La Bala'.

I haven't driven the car yet and so don't have definitive information on setup, balance. alignment, etc. I've tried to design in as much adjustability as possible to be able to tune out anything undesirable.

Regards,
Dave

Dave,

Your right , you have answered all my questions about the alignment you have put into the car.......my question was more of a ' what if' ?

I understand your position on anti sqat and it all makes good sense.........but in my case I wondered about rear caster....my thoughts go more towards a bit of positive caster for an auto cross situation, and a bit negitive in a drag race application....and when I spoke of instant center location, I was speaking about the center of the trailing arms as they converge from a verticle look....the only reason I ask is because we are both dealing with unequal axles, the left axle in my case is going to deliver more torque then the right because of length and so my thoughts were about moving the roll axis to the short side and load the left rear a little harder. Moving on with that same thought , my trailing arms are arrainged much like a three link set up from a circle car and to aviod wheel hop under hard braking , my brake calipers should feed energy into the frame rails instead of the trailing arms.............
the only reason I built this car was for test bed reasons, mostly to understand turbo's and injection better, and to promote my business to local kids.........so its never going to be a great racer or any of all that, but there isnt anything worse than completing a car to find out it handles like a pig

Thanks Dave

Bill,

I don't believe changing the rear caster is going to have much affect. The main reason I had for wanting zero rear caster was to simplify setting the bump steer.

I suggest that you have your trailing arms converge at the center of the car and adjust your thrust line with toe.

Rear wheel hop under braking could be caused by brake bias to far rearward, rear shocks to much rebound, suspension binding in droop, or downshifting too aggressively.
