Default Engine machining procedures? Need Info on metal shavings

Does anyone have a link or any info on the machining procedures that are done to a performance block and crank? Methods of machining maybe even myths of machining- is there such thing as shaving too much? (insert pun here)

This would be a cool post if any of you engine machinests had some pics of the processes.
i.e. stepped deck, counterweighing, knife-edging

*Has anyone been able to prove a performance gain with these procceses DYNO my rhino
