I almost had to do this. However, thankfully Pep Boys sells a filter tool that goes over the end, like a socket on a nut, instead of the ones you have to use from the side.
You can always use the screwdriver, just be prepared to make a mess.

If your in a jam and you have no other car this is a very easy solution. There is nothing wrong with it but be prepared to make a mess.

That is a last resort. Last time I did that, I ended up getting some nasty *** oil in my eye. It makes a huge mess.

Last time me and my friend did the the oil filter just split, so we couldn't get it off, luckily the engine was out so we chised at the side and slowly it turned and we got it. but yeah, don't do what that guy said.

guess ya didnt like the screwdriver idea take your new oil filter to a autoparts place and they have these plastic socket things that go on the end of the filter you just put it on a ratchet and it turns it right off just make sure you get the right one

No joke, I've had to use the screwdriver method when there was absolutley no other way, but a strong grip or proper wrech works well.
