Installed uber Vtec lights!! Now I have a CEL :P
I know, I know, it's dumb. But I was wanting to know when the Vtec comes in. To my suprise, it's on ALOT. Kicks in about 2500 rpm depending on the amount of throttle applied.
Anyway, I drove it for about 5 mins yesterday right after I got done, then later that evening I drove for about 5 more mins. About 3 mins into my lil drive, the CEL comes on.
I'm thinking that the computer is seeing a diff voltage draw from the Vtec solenoid and that's why it's throwin the CEL light. I'll find out for sure when I get home today.
Anybody else think that's it?
FYI, I used 3 LED's and I wired it to the Vtec solenoid. Come to think of it, I bought the LED's pre wired (already had the wires and resistor wired on) from Ebay. They were for use in a car.. I figured they would the OK to use for my Vtec lights. Could that be it? The wrong resistor used is triggering the CEL? From what I see on Ebay, they don't use 330 ohm resistors.. Hmnnn..
But on a positive note, the lights look EXTREMELY cool, much better than I thought. I'll get a pic tonight

You're right on the money with your suspicion's. By inserting that bulb and all that wiring, you changed the resistance of the entire circuit.
The ECM is programmed to expect a certain resistance value, and when it receives something different; it's an indication somethings wrong and sets the light.
A novel idea and certainly an interesting engineering exercise.
If you want to continue with the problem solving, you might consider either the use of an electronic relay (no impedance) or tapping into the VTec oil feed circuit and use a pressure switch to turn on the lamp. Either way, the ECM wouldn't be effected.

What I thought. I'm not too dumb after all
I hate the CEL light, but my Vtec lights look so cool! Awww man, descisions descisions.
Hmnnnn... I bet if I installed a switch to turn the lights off and on, that would return everything to normal. I must try this.
I've read several threads on this and nobody ever mentioned a CEL light bein thrown. So why me? Because I have 3 LED's or what? Other pple have only one. Maybe w/one the ohm diff. isn't enough for the computer to worry about?

The pic blows, but you can kinds get an idea. I lights up the back seat

But now, my car is skipping! It's like I've gotten bad gas or something, but it's too much of a coincidence that it starts RIGHT after I installed my Vtec light.
Just poking along at 2000 rpm in 4th, it's lunging a lil bit, very annoying.

I'm gonna put evrything back to normal and reset the puter tomorrow. Hopefully that'll fix it and it's indeed the Vtec light wiring causing this.
just use one Led from the vtec line, the ecu wont tell the differnce, unless you it wired wrong. Make sure u hooked it up to a good ground to bare metal, or bolt you should be fine
I have mine hooked up under the stock cruse control botton, so when im in vtec the word cruse is let. i only use it for saving gas issues ,helps me stay light on the gas.

Well, it's not wired wrong. I mean, come on... Run the positive wire from the Vtec solenoid to the positive on the LED and then run a ground: How easy is that? It's not wired wrong. The only thing that could be wrong there is I don't have a good enough ground, but I don't think thats it because the lights come on fine.
I just think that since I have 3 LED's and the wrong resistor is being used on each of them, it's just too much for my lil computer to comprehend and is freaking out. :S I did cut the wire under the hood last night going to the LED's and this morning, I still have the CEL but it seems to be running normal again. I'll reset the CPU at breaktime today.
And as far as being rice, I can definetly use this to save gas, which I'm huge on saving gas
I was so suprised to see how often the Vtec comes on. Plus it looks pretty cool and I did something to my car: Even though I screwed it up. hehehe
If I can, I'll mess w/it this weekend and see if I can't at least have one LED hooked up w/out a resistor, like fw190bvi said, or use the correct resistors. I'll get a better pic too.
Hopefully I won't have enough time to mess w/it because I'll be goin to get my GSR and I'll be busy messin w/it
I can't wait!!!
Damn I'm wordy

the main reason you rhave to use a resistor on the LED is because the diodes are relativley weak -running too much voltage will cause too much energy to be emiited by the diode, and the LED will overheat and explode. i think if you use a red LED w/ a smaller resistor might work out.
how about you check why you cel is on? maybe run the codes.

your vtec should not be kicking in at 2500rpms something is wrong or you set up your lights wrong. I have a feeling you hooked up the light to pressure sensor instead of vtec.
again check what code the check engine light is.

check my other thread Ive got goin w/the problem I'm having. It has pics what I hooked it too.
Fron wmat I gathered and from pics I've seen, that's the Vtec switch.
