Default infamous rattle..

98 gsr
91k miles
greddy headers
aem intake
2 1/4 piping from cat to muffler (welded, flange from cat to muffler)
^ i did 2 1/4 because my resonator was rusted to *****.
no check engine light

the problem:
rattle, metal peices hitting together or chattering together..
only happens around 2200~2500 rpm
its constant at those range of rpms
only at those rpms
no matter what gear i'm in while cruising
it doesn't rattle while warming up.
when you go for a drive after the car is fully warmed up, stop, rev to the general rpm (it rattles). < while in neutral
clutch in or out = same problem, it rattles.

the area:
from the cockpit = I hear it coming most audibly comin from the left front wheel.
outside = near the header area

tried:
looking for heatshields (cat, header) = none
header bracket = none
loose bolts = none
knocking on pippings to see if any rocks or objects was left inside = none
tightening all bolts = done
checked bushing = done

someone help! any other ideas of places I can look?

I have the SAME rattle coming from the front left. It almost sounds like a bundle of wires slapping against the plastics. If you slowly let the clutch out and the engine stutters a bit, does it get really loud?

It only gets loud if it keep it at that certain rpm. It gets really annoying after awhile. My way of trying to ignore it right now is to go up 1 gear higher or go down 1 gear if it comes into affect.

i've had interesting rattles due to my exhaust system. One was a heatshield where the "s" shaped pipe bends, the next rattle was greddy sp muffler system was falling apart internally, next was my greddy cat back resonator was falling apart/bad welds from greddy, next (sounds some what similar to your problem) was loose bolts from the header to cat. I thought they were tight, but I had to really torque them down and the rattling went away.

I've actually thought at first my pippings (when it was rusted) so i opted for 2.25 pippings. But clearly that didn't fix the problem either. So I'm stuck with an irritating sound for the past 2 months.

That's interesting, I have that same rattle at about 1500 while it's warming up and while I'm driving. I think mine's due to the header bracket bolts falling off, not sure though. It could also be the upper heatshield on the cat.

My cat is fine. No issues there. That was the first thing that I thought about when I heard the noise. But the cat wasn't it.

woo, Not really sure then, but like iH8 said,
sometimes certain spots are just not tight enough.

I had that happen where my a-pipe connects to the cat,
turned out that the bolt was just too old, so I got a shorter/newer one,
tightened it down good, and the rattle went away.

but other then that, I've only ran into stuff with my cat and the one loose part.

Oh and by the cat, I meant the actual internals, not just the heatshield.
Did you check the whole thing, and take it out?
Cause the problem with mine, was some honeycomb was broken up.

I'm positive that every bolt on there is tight. Because I checked it then my cousin came under the car and doubled checked himself. So that would most likely be ruled out.

I did though check one of my o2 sensors the first one was lose so i tighten that but the problem still persist.

I never had to replace it because its working fine. But I did take it out to inspect and put it back on. Torqued everything down to specs.

i just answered this question in another thread. your rattling is coming from the header. the gasket between where the 4 pipes bolt together to the 2 pipes is recalled (or at least i told it was), but regaurdless i went out and bought a new header and my problem was solved. of course you could go out and just buy a new gasket, but it was just an excuse for me to get a performace part lol. good luck in fixing your problem. - brian.

Did you have a greddy header? I took that off and it seems to fit tight between the header and the downpipe.

Crawl under the car and lightly rap on the exhaust with a hammer. If a rattle exists there you will stimulate it.

i did not have a greddy header, it was a DC header, however it is still very common for that gasket to go bad and i have a very good feeling that is your problem.

I'll look into that. I'll check it out later tonight when I get home. I'll fill you guys in.

OT:
Last weekend while my friend was under my car, he found out that my motor mount L bracket didn't have a bolt in it. So it was hitting against the firewall.. Ain't that some poo poo?

You could go to a muffler shop or any shop with a rack and lift it up and while you rev in the vibration range, someone underneath can use a pair of thermal gloves and search for your vibration/cause of noise. I am due to do this again.
