Removing the crank pulley, NEED HELP!!
I have a 92 gsr that the timing jumped i never have messed with timing but i am going to on this motor. i heard that you can take the crank pulley off if you got somebody in the car holding the brakes and you have the car in gear that you can brake the crank pulley loose is that true. I dont have the tool or the air pressure to take the crank pulley off I did have the compressor but sold it a while ago. So my question is can i get the crank pulley off with a breaker bar and a pipe on the end of it if somebody in the car holding the brakes and have it in gear.
The brake crap is b.s. I try that method so many time before and the force is not even strong enough to hold the dayum crank pulley still. The best method is of course purchasing a hex took to lock it in place and loosen it. Also, the other way is to stick a strong flathead onto the flywheel teeth to hold it. If all else fail, just go to a car shop and ask them to loosen the bolt with their allmighty powerful air tool. G/l.
Your asking about the crankshaft pulley Bolt right? I've spent about 8 hours trying to remove mine, I tried the breakers bar + brake and that didn't work. I also tried the starter trick and that didn't work. Drenched it in PB blaster i did everything.
Now, i've heard of stories where a few breakers bars + pipe extensions working but most of the time they will require some work.
What it finally took was i called a buddy who worked at a honda dealership, brought over an oem pulley holder + shop handle + very very big / long extensions. He somehow calculated it to be 515 lbs of torque for mine to come off.
Best bet, go to a shop and have them hit it w/ a 3/4 impact wrench, then you tighten it as hard as you can with yuor breaker bars and drive home OR torch it.

You do know that you don't have to remove the crank pulley to retime the engine. If you are replacing the belt, yes, but if you are just resetting the cam gears to TDC and the crank pulley white mark at the lower cover pointer, the crank pulley can remain installed.

This would be the easier route since you don't have the tool
BTW to the original poster, just loosen the tenisor pulley bolt and get the belt on and retighten it again to factory specs (30-34 ft-lbs)
And last of course check the timing once you get the engine running to make sure all the marks are witin timing specs +/- 16 TDC

I was trying to get mine off wit ha half inch air impact,
needless to say, it didn't move at all.
Breaker bar with some Long extensions would be better probably.

The hex holder can be found on Amazon.com for around $25!!! Dont pay $90 or so for the Snap-On, the one from Amazon has held up fine for me!!! HTH
I tried the brakes method in 5th gear and all it did was move the car forward. The tool that fits in the pulley is what you want to use. My buddy made me one out of a big nut welded to a huge wrench and it worked great. I tried for about 5hrs to get it off before that snapped it loose real quick. The rest of the timing belt process is easy minus getting the belt on and lined up correctly.

I tried the friend holding the breake and the car being in fifth. What worked was a impact gun.

Tried that IR 2135ti on my buddy's crank pulley bolt... no go even with the compressor set to 150psi. This gun is the **** but sometimes stubborn bolts require the old fashion breaker bar with a 4foot cheater. Using the Honda crank pulley tool with a breaker bar and another 4 foot cheater, when it cracked loose it did so like a gun shot.

Yeah I was like ****, I must have broken it off b/c that sound did not sound like a good noise. The next time I tried it on my friends CRX the noise was the gears of my 2nd 1/2in crafstman ratchet slipping! I need to invest in a good breaker bar I suppose. But then again the lifetime replacement is going to get me two new ones once I get to the mall to return them.

This one is much cheaper. http://www.amazon.com/gp/produ...28013
Well it didnt work. I put it in 5th gear held the brakes and the motor turn freely. So I didnt get it broke loose so i gotta get the tool to do it or the impact so either one will work but i like to get it done as soon as possible. Thanks for your's input. I cant wait intill the timing is done for I can put that b17 down in my crx it will be quick as hell.
The brake trick works fine if you have the wheels on and the car is on the ground. Just turn the wheel left full lock and you will have a straight shot at the crank pulley. Just need a really long 1/2" extension and a big breaker bar. I do the same for axle nuts. Just pop the center cap out.
man that bolt is a bitch to get out.. my buddy and I spent hours trying to take his crank pulley off. we ended up taking off the starter.. stick a screw driver through the hole into the hole in the flywheel. then we stuck a breaker bar and a socket on the pulley bolt. then attatched a tow rope to the end of the breaker bar.. and ran it through the bottom of the car to the back.. hooked the other end to a van.. and pop the van in reverse and it came right offf!!!!
worked for me everytime.
