having a few problems with my 02 EX
ok to start out i have a 2002 accord EX with the f23a4 4-cylinder backed by a 5 speed manual with 126,000 miles. i've been having a few problems recently....
1. it seems to be using alot of oil (about a quart or so for every tank of gas !!!) and i have no idea where its going. i have checked all over for leaks and there are none. and as for burning it im not seeing any of the normal signs such as smoke while driving or any oil residue around the exhaust on the bumper.
2. i do not seem to be getting very good gas mileage. i have read on other posts on this site about how the older accords get a cloged EGR. is this a common problem on all higher mileage accords ??
3. and finally i just noticed the other day that while under load in 1st through 3rd there seems to be a thumping noise coming from the front end. could this be the beginning of a CV Joint going bad ??
and also i've been told that VTEC uses oil whenever its engaged... is this true ??
ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED

1)that's very unusual for such new car, is the car properly break-in'ed?
for example, if you change your motor oil with syn. oil right without breaking in the car first(assuming you got your 02 new), the rings will not seat and seal correctly.
vtec will not burn/use/take away oil if you understand how it works.
2)again, for a 4 years old car, egr shouldn't give you crap. to be exact what kinda of number you are seeing?

i have no idea if the car was broken in porperly or not... i got it with 82,000 miles on it a little over a year ago and since then i've changed the oil on a regular basis. it just turned over 126,000 today. as for the exact numbers on the gas mileage i never actuly figued that out... i guess i should do that.
and yeah i figured my friend was full of it when he said vtec used oil

it's a common honda myth, it could be just a combination of worn ring and high revving, etc
do you have a v6 or four banger?
4 banger can get 350-400 with granny shift on hwy

its the 4 cylinder..... 350 to 400 huh.. maby im not gettin as bad of mileage as i thought. cuz id say i prob get around 300 and i live up in the mountians without a major highway for a least 20 miles (which blows by the way LOL). so your guess would be a ring(s) ?
if your car is buring oil, you will see it as blue smoke when it gets really bad. How hard have you been driving your car?
Is there oil in your intake? if there is you are screwed.

with my '94 I can get 479 out of 14.5 gals of gas or just above 33mpg at 80mph it was a LX. With my '98 LX V6 I can bust 32mpg at 70 with the V6

that's whats confusing me... there is no smoke or leaks, and by intake im gonna assume that you mean the filter, and no i've checked that to and its still nice and dry. i do drive it hard sometimes but rarely ever to redline or anything that would be excessively hard on the engine.
alright,
you mentioned that your car is loosing oil and you have checked for the following
1. external leaks- none found
2. oil in the exhaust - none
3. oil in the intake - none
Things to check
1. oil on the plugs? check that
2. When you car is cold open up the cooling system and check to see if you got oil in there.
125K is a little young for a honda to start burning oil. The car talk guys seem to think that anything uder 1 quart per 3K miles is OK but I have to disagree with them when it comes to the big 3 japanese car makers. I have never had to add oil to my honda between changes and the oil is always at the full mark when I check it. if you cannot find any external leaks it has to be consuming oil and you really won't know where until the engine is taken apart.
