oh lord
oh lord
lol...right.
Anyways...heres what you need to know...
2001-2003 models with tiptronic auto tranny had the issues (as well as the 2002-2003 TL). The Type-S models were the most natorious but all of them had the issues. Basically the tranny has a recall on it from Honda/Acura which replaces it up to 100k on the car, but the problem is, they dont have a permanent fix on this problem, the trannies get replaced and break again...its just a endless cycle. One person might NEVER have problems with their tranny, the next guy (like i did) might go through 3-4 transmissions in the time they own it (i personally saw 3 go into the car and 1 that was replaced before i owned it, i also drove mine hard so that might have something to do with it)...
Other than the tranny issue, the cars are gems...alot of HP/Torque, alot of luxury, a good price. If you can get your hands on a 2003 CL Type-S with the 6speed manual (2003 was the only year this was offered)...you'll be good to go because as of yet, i have heard no issues about the manual transmission.
Now i dont care anything about your street racing desires or whatever, if thats your goal, let me say that while this car IS quick for a luxury sport coupe, it is not a FAST car without alot of work...if you look at the average #'s for people with the supercharged setups...they are still only mustering out about high 13's from the car, some low-mid 13's...and if thats your idea of fast for a $5,000 addition, then you'll be happy, otherwise, its not that great and that can be primarily attributed to the fact that the car is front wheel drive...the biggest downfall of the model in my opinion.
The CL Type-S is an awesome car with a major akeles heal in its auto tranny (which just happens to be the most common trim found too)...i must say, i had a 2001 before my bimmer (fully loaded with navigation) and it was an awesome car, but i just couldnt take the fact that it literally felt like a broken car after so many trips back to Acura for a new tranny...and if you plan to race this thing, expect to be in the same boat.
**Edit**
I just noticed you said "the engine comes with 200hp stock", so im curious if what i said even applied to you...the CL-S came with 260hp stock, just FYI...and about 230ftlbs...

yea, i believe he's talking about the 97-99 3.0 CL, which in that case means it has to be automatic...which also means that no matter what, it's gonna be slow. i know cause i have one as a daily driver and i think that's what it's best at.
just slam the thing, maybe throw on a intake and exhaust and call it a day cause you're not gonna get much power out of it
it took me 4 years to realize this and now it's completely back to stock

Yeah...if you're talking the older model CL's, as far as i know the only "problem" they had was that they are/were underpowered and heavy...pretty much an Accord coupe with a few extra lbs and the same power.
also, in your attempt to turn your cl into a "race" car, you'll find that you will be spending lots of money replacing your tranny. i'm on my 3rd tranny right now and it's starting to go again
on me for road rage and not warming up the car properly.
so either you'll end up spending thousands of dollars on fixing or replacing your trans or you'll spend thousands on converting it to manual. best of luck to you

you'll probably find a lot more help here http://www.acura-cl.com since there's a larger cl community there
ps. don't expect acura-cl to move as fast as honda-tech

If you have a 1st gen CL, it will probably never be fast. I have a '97 2.2 CL with a 5 speed and the thing weighs over 3k lbs. It was meant to be a luxury cruiser not a 'street racer'. To get it to run 14's you would need all the bolt-on, nitrous and gut the hell out of it. It shares many of its parts with the '90(?) - '97 Accord, so there's actually some decent aftermarket support.
IMO, if you're building a 1st gen CL to be fast, I'd get a 4 cylinder with a 5 speed, swap in an H22 and then turbo it. Lots of work for a car that might run mid 14's, but then again you'd probably surprise a lot of people.

Bolt on's and 150-200 shot and you will be pretty quick on the highway if you have the 3.0 CL. You can always drop in a the 6 speed tranny for a few grand.
My brothers 3.0 with I/H/E Crank pulley and 75 shot was fun to drive. I am trying to get him to go with a 150 shot this summer. Then when he gets some more money he is going to do the 6 speed swap.
I have a stone racing header for the 3.0 and tokico blue shocks for it for pretty cheap.

how about an engine swap. since it has the same motor and the base model of an accord. i guess maybe i dont know, you might be able to put an H22? like the accord R? lol just a suggestion.
the 1st gen CL j30 can be swapped for the j32 motor with 6spd tranny, its a direct swap, both J series motors, it'll just be a pain in the *** to find a j32 with 6spd
if I had the money or the time and a first gen cl I would look for a j35 out of the new RL and a 6 speed with the LSD. that should be pritty quick as I am pritty sure the first gen cls are like 200-500 pounds lighter than the second gen cls
^^^ And then you'd end up spending more money than its worth trying to get that platform to fit with its drivetrain...lol, gotta love optimistic but ultimately, silly ideas for engine swaps.
I dont think front to back the J35 is much bigger I think it is a bit taller though but that could be fixed Mustang style with a raised hood heh. Anyways I was just being stupid for a stupid question. What he should do is tube frame it and stick the engine out of the new zo6 in it if he wants the ultimate cl street racer
