Default CAI install

I need to install a CAI on a 99 ex 4 cyl. I have heard that the only way to get the bottom half of the airbox out is to take off part of the front bumper and the passenger front tire. Is this true? If it is, what is the best way to get the bumper off? Anything would help. Thanx

It's easier to remove the bumper when trying to get to the resonator. You won't need to remove the tire.

removing the front bumper is easy. i was kinda scared the first time cause i didn't know there was a bracket holding the bumper in place. i thought i was going to break my bumper in half is i pulled to hard.

but other than that, it's easy.

i didnt take my bumper off, and it was pretty easy to get to the resonator. i just removed the passenger-side wheel well splash guard stuff... just a few of those annoying pins and some screws, turned my tire, and got the resonator out of there. the bolt on the farther side of it was a little bit of a pain because i couldnt see it too well, but that wasnt much of anything. its really easy to do, and IMHO no need to go through the few extra steps of removing the whole bumper.

I have 2001 Honda Accord 4dr 4 cyl, same gen as yours so install should be the same.

Installing a CAI is simple. Just take the bumper off. May seem intimidating at first, but its really easy once you do it once. There are 4 bolts and probably around 10 tab/clips that hold it on. 1 bolt is located in each tire well, where the bumper meets the car frame. There other two are located on the bottom of the bumper near each tire well. Then there are probably about 8 clips that go across the bottom of the bumper. Pop the center of each clip out and just pull the black tab out. Then there are two on the top of the grill that need to come out. Then just slowly start working the bumper off. I started from each tire well and just eased it off. I can get a picture if you need it.

unless you have tiny hands, removing the bumper will save alot of time instead of fishing stuff in there.

my palms are actually friggin huge... i guess im just good at manipulating my body, cause i just reached under the splashguard area once i got it off and took out everything. thats just the way i did it, if youd rather take the bumper off go for it.

when I took my res out I just took the wheel off, but I admit that one bolt was kind of a bitch to unscrew with my big neanderthal hands... didnt want to mess w/ all the clips for the bumper, I broke 2 clips just getting the well cover off...

to get the clips out w/o breakage you need 1:flathead 2: pliers, you gotta pull the center part of the clip out carefully w pliers (it looks ilke a screw w/ no threads right?), then the outer housing comes out with no resistance, if I remember right.
The clips on my bro's WRX were a lot harder though and when he took his silencer out he broke a bunch more, even with my help it was way harder than a Honda. But I guess the Wrx is a bit more high-perf. and needs sturdier parts. Its turboed, 0-60 in like 6 secs. .
* As soon as I get paid Im gonna buy some replacement clips from Honda to secure the well cover properly and 1 clip up front near the bumper I believe I broke.

I took off my resonator box today. It came out with a little trouble but got it out okay. I had to take the bumper off like you guys showed me. It was a lot of help. I ended up breaking about 2-3 of those clips and come to find out, they are $2.32 each at the dealer. The car sounds a lot better now when i am over 3000 rpms. My new cone filter is coming in the mail in a couple of days. That brings me to my next question. Is it okay to drive the car without the resonator box? I just have the filter box and the tubing with the filter. Also, is it okay to drive while I'm missing 2 clips, or could the bumper come off. I have the side screws on tight. Thanx for all the help.

It's perfectly fine to drive w/o the resonator, and you should be fine without the 2 clips for now.

Okay, here is the problem at hand. When i took out my resonator box, i had to unclip the passenger plastic lining in the wheel well to get to the bolt at the back of the box. Now i put the lining back together correctly(i think i did) and i was pulling out of a parking lot yesterday and the whole plastic lining just ripped out of the car. I freaked out. Now i have to buy a new lining and all new clips and bolts because the plastic lining completely tore and all the clips went shooting out of my car. I know this may seem funny to some people as all my friends couldnt stop laughing but now this is going to cost me $50 to fix.

i think its obvious that something wasnt put back on correctly. i know when i pulled my lining off, i ripped alot of those clips, but with whatever clips that were still useable, i pushed those back in as much as i could. i did this back in early december, but mine never came off. i guess something just didnt go back in correctly.

Thats why you make sure you know how to put it back together if you take it apart. Its a hell of alot easier to take stuff apart then put it back together. I would have recommended taking off your bumper.... easier to work on :/

As i had stated earlier, i did take off my front bumper. But there was a bolt way back that i could not reach with my socket wrench, so i had to take off the lining to get to it. I think that i put one of those clips in a spot where a bolt was supposed to go.(my mistake).

I didn't take off the wheel or the bumper when I installed my intake. I put in an AEM V2 an I just moved the bumper a little and turned the wheel a lot! You can pull it out without removing the wheel or the bumper, it is just a little harder. The time probably ends up being about the same.
