Identify tranny, Y1 or YS1?
Is there any way we could differentiate Y1 and YS1 without the labels on them? Somehow I couldn't find any info on this, on this forum nor the net.
I've been running my B16 for quite some time already. The motor was an auto from 1989 DA8 halfcut (very very cheap offer), but I swapped to manual when I dropped it in my EF. The problem is, the B-series tranny I had from the junk was without any label on it.

ys1 has a larger spline vs the y1/s1
score a ys1/s80/y80 clutch disc. if it fits then you have a ys1
another way to check is count the teeth on the spline. I belive the large spline count is 21.
google it

oh ...before I forgot, it's a JDM spec tranny (we don't get USDM parts here in Malaysia)... using cable type clutch.
that left me with probabilities of having Y1(SiR), S1/J1 (89-90 XSi/RSi) or YS1 (91-92 XSi/RSi)

What rpm are you turning at 80mph in 5th?
Then go here and start plugging in values:

Some how I get 90km/h in the 5th gear at 3000rpm
I'll try look for the rpm at higher speed tomorrow. Thanks for the link... that calculator should work like charm!
But I guess it might need a digital speed reader to get a more precise reading
does the USDM YS1 ratios different from JDM YS1?

I had a Y1 LSD tranny, and the mainshaft accepted a "hydro" clutch disk.
Hence I thought I had a YS1. I opened it up and the ratios were all Y1.
An easy way to tell the difference is if the case has the two shifter
spring/ball bolt holes. These are only found on YS1 and Hydro trannies.
See #1 and #2 below.

BTW: Wes' site is pretty neat.

The YS1 tranny is cable!!! not hydro
It came out of 92-93 Integra models only.

No they are the same, its just that the jdm version was offered as an option with factory installed LSD, but only some had it.

...its a great excuse for when cops pull you over.
"But officer, I was only going 25mph over the speed limit to determine what gear ratio I have in my transmission."

Hydro trannies have those 2 bolt holes.
YS1 trannies have those 2 bolt holes.
Early cable trannies do not have these 2 bolt holes.
And BTW, there is a LS YS1 and a VTEC YS1. So you still have to make
sure what you're getting.

doing around 75 mph.. on 5th gear.. and my tranny has a S1 label on it.. does that sound right??? is that any good?? cause i also have a 97 GSR hydro tranny i beleive is labeled S80. if you had the choice to run the JDM S1.... or the USDM GSR S80.... which one would u go for?

is there a difference between the gear ratios? kindly explain, thanks
i have both the JDM S1 and YS1 LSD cable trannies. the exedy clutch kit that i have for the S1 cable(P.N. 08-804) does NOT fit on the YS1 due to YS1's larger main shaft. you need exedy 92-93 integra cable clutch kit(P.N.08-800A). I'm going to place an order soon from clutchcityonline.

sorry, i didn't mean to hijack this thread but did anyone make use of the YS1 LSD assembly into an S1 tranny? is this possible?
thanks for your inputs

1) yes. the VTEC YS1 has shorter gears + 4.4 final drive. which means
better acceleration. the LS YS1 uses a 4.2 final drive.
look @ this table
2) As long as the final drive gear meshes with the countershaft. It should work.
The diff should just drop in place (Quaiffe says the their diff works
in Integra GS/LS '90-00, Integra GS-R '92-93 60.309.160 )
So I think it's doable.

thanks man, i really appreciate it.
one more question though, is there such thing like VTEC YS1 LSD and an LS YS1 LSD? reason being that i picked up a used YS1 LSD (see last two pics in my link). i don't know if this came off from a LS or from a JDM 92-93 Integra RSi/XSi but i'm pretty sure that this tranny was never openned as seen from the cover's bolts, they're untouched. so pretty much factory unit.

No LS model from any year ever came with an lsd option. Only the vtec model ys1's from 92-93 integra's were offered with the option outside of north america.
