i know this should go under "appearance" and all, I've been reading this board for a while but finally became a member tonight (still trial).

I have a 98 prelude, non SH, phat, but lately i've been noticing that black strip around my side windows is starting to "mold" and crack and come off revealing shiny metal underneath. Its not the weather stripping, and it's not the body paint, it's that other stuff (some type of trim?). As soon as I figure out how to post pics I'll give you all one to be more specific. I've seen this happen on other cars that are getting up there in age.

My question is: how can I fix this? Can I just sand it down, tape up and spraypaint it? I've never painted the outside of my car (save for some minor scratch touch ups) and I'm a little cautious. What are the step/products that are used?
