Ok, what the hell.

Edmunds thinks I can get a used 2001 for $16,786, (which I KNOW is bullshit, so don't bother posting that ) and auto trader has ITR's ranging from 30k to 22k... if MSRP was $23k, a year later... how can NO ITR's be going for less than that? I thought cars were supposed to depreciate

Urgh... Just venting...

Do a search. I've personally seen 3 or 4 going for 21-22k within the past week

Agreed, Ed.

Jason-
who would pay more for a '97 than an '01 in the same condition

I've got a nice one for you.. its got about 400 miles on the motor. Its got a nice white over spray tint to it. The tranny does not shift into 2nd or 4th. All this can be yours for only 30k. It does come with an ATS FD and spoon calipers though HID's extra

There are a bunch of different factors going on. Here's what you've got to keep in mind:

1. Edmunds is bullshit.

2. The MSRP was $24,800, not $23,000. Admittedly, some people paid less than MSRP, and others paid more. Most of the '00-01 R's sold for between $24K and $25K, excluding tax and options and such.

3. The ITR holds its value well. An '00 or '01 in good condition and low miles may indeed sell for only $2-3K less than it cost new. That's called "supply and demand".

4. Some people have an inflated view of what their cars are worth, so theirs are the ads that are going to sit on the boards for a long time without any takers.

5. Autotrader has mostly (but not entirely) dealers, whose prices tend to be higher (but who may be willing to come down in price more for a serious offer). You may be able to find a better deal on h-t.com classifieds, itrca.com classifieds, or eBay, all of which are populated mostly by individuals.

6. The prices posted in any classifieds are asking prices. Individuals generally expect to come down in price by 5 to 10 percent less than their asking price, and dealers may even come down more than 10 percent. Remember, if you find one that you want and the price isn't that far off, you can always make an offer; worst that happens is they say no. (However, a few more rules: a. Don't lowball - make an offer so much lower than the asking price that it pisses them off; b. If you make an offer, make sure you're serious and willing to follow through on it; c. Remember that they may come back with a counter-offer, so don't start out with the highest you're absolutely willing to pay unless you're prepared to walk away from the deal.)

Buy one in time for the Expo. Good luck.

If you're actually going to buy one, this should make you happy. You'll have to pay a good bit up front, but you wont lose as much money if you ever sell it.
My mustang has doubled the rate of inflation for the last 36 years. Some cars do hold value...

That's actually why I'm getting one over a 2002 Si or something. I figure the value loss will be hardly noticable. *shrug*

FWIW two of my friends have offered me $23,500 for my 2001 NBP, bone stock with 5,000 miles on it. I honestly think thats a fair deal both ways but I don't want to part with her yet

My 2k FBP is for sale for 20,500. Its got 25k miles. That price will be for the car stock, i'll end up parting out the rest since I figure it will be harder to sell a car w/ the few mods I have (see sig). I havent advertised it heavily yet, i've only mentioned it here on the board a few times and i have been called a few times.

Well, my '00 PY ITR w/ 10k on it wouldn't go for less than $20k, I guarantee. Not unless I lost my job or some crap and was forced to sell for less. I would definately ask $21.5k or $22k...but you have to start somewhere.

The prices that you last four guys were/are asking seem very reasonable to me. If I did not have one, but knowing what I know about them, I'd LEAP on any of them. Post haste.

I'm going to be selling my 98 in 4-5 months for mid to low $16k's. It will have about 60k miles at that time. If you don't have one by then, keep it in mind. Good luck.

Yes. On the ITR, if you turn off the car and open the door without turning off the lights, it makes a warning sound (like a long solid beep) to warn you to turn them off.
