Acura Readying Smaller, Less-Pricey SUV
This summer, luxury carmaker Acura will bring a second sport-utility vehicle to its American showrooms.
The 2007 RDX prototype, unveiled at the NAIAS, is close to the production version of the new vehicle, Acura officials said. It’s sized comparably to the BMW X3 and will be lower priced than Acura’s current SUV, the MDX.
The RDX also features an Acura first: A turbocharged engine under the hood.
“We saw a need for a premium entry SUV,” said Jon Mendel, senior vice president for automotive operations at American Honda Motor Co. He added that the RDX segment is forecasted to grow “over 500 percent in the next five years.”

Acura’s current SUV, the midsize MDX, has a starting manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $37,125. Mendel wouldn’t say how much below that the smaller RDX would be priced, but he said the RDX will attract buyers who are younger than MDX buyers.
The RDX will feature two rows of seats for a maximum of five passengers, while the MDX comes standard with three rows of seats for a maximum of seven passengers.
The MDX is powered by a V6. But the RDX comes with a 2.3-liter, turbocharged, four-cylinder engine with i-VTEC variable valve timing. This engine can generate 240 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque, which Mendel noted is more than what some V6-powered SUVs provide.
The benefit of the smaller engine: Better fuel economy. But no specific fuel mileage numbers have yet been released from Acura.
Uniquely, drivers of the RDX will be able to use paddle shifters on the steering wheel to operate the 5-speed automatic transmission with sequential SportShift.
Interior features include a good amount of standard equipment, including six standard airbags and stability control as well as a deep, large center console that can accommodate many laptops and purses.
The RDX prototype has a fully independent suspension, front and rear. There will be no front-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive RDX. Rather, the five-door vehicle will come only with Acura’s Super Handling All-Wheel-Drive system that automatically distributes torque front and rear. At the rear wheels, the system also can split the torque between the right and left sides of the vehicle. The result is improved handling and traction.
Mendel explained that, even though the RDX is built on a new light-truck platform, the vehicle is not designed for rugged off-roading. He also declined to call the RDX a “crossover.” Rather, he said, it’s more of “an urban activity vehicle.”
He projected annual sales of between 30,000 and 50,000. It will be built at a Honda assembly plant in Marysville, Ohio. Honda is the parent company of Acura.
Additionally, Mendel noted Acura marks its 20th anniversary this year. It was the first luxury brand in the U.S. from a Japan-based carmaker.
Thus, Acura opened its press conference at the auto show with a video clip from a late 1980s episode of the NBC Today Show. In it, an executive from Swedish carmaker Volvo predicted that a luxury brand from a Japanese car company wouldn’t succeed.
Well, Mendel said, “Acura is entering its third decade.” He also noted that Acura posted record sales in the U.S. last year of nearly 210,000 vehicles. He said he expects continued growth in calendar 2006
