NHRA XPLOD SPORT COMPACT SERIES TO OFFER REGIONAL SPORTSMAN CHAMPIONSHIPS IN 2006
GLENDORA, Calif. (Feb. 9, 2006) – For the first time in the history of the NHRA Xplōd Sport Compact Racing Series regional sportsman champions will be crowned in four classes in 2006, it was announced today by NHRA officials.
In an effort to reinforce the commitment at the grassroots level of the NHRA Xplōd Sport Compact Racing Series, regional sportsman championships will be awarded in UrbanRacer.com Sport FWD, Sport RWD, Quick 16 and Street Stock.
“The Sportsman Championship program is the next evolution in the growth of the series,” said Josh Peterson, general manager, NHRA Xplōd Sport Compact Racing Series. “Due to the tremendous success of the four sportsman categories in 2005, NHRA created the Sportsman Championship program to further show our commitment to the sportsman racers and teams.”
The East Region will consist of six events, including two races each at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in Englishtown, N.J. and Moroso Motorsports Park in Jupiter, Fla., and one race at Virginia Motorsports Park near Richmond, Va. and Atco (N.J. ) Raceway. The East Region sportsman class champions will be determined by drivers point totals in the best four out of six events.
The West Region will consist of three events, including races at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway; Bandimere Speedway near Denver and Auto Club Raceway at Pomona in Southern California. West Region sportsman class champions will be determined by drivers with the highest point total after three events.
Competitors in UrbanRacer.com Sport FWD, Sport RWD, Quick 16 and Street Stock will be required to register for a single region. Competitors can compete in both regions, but only earn championship points in a single region.
To be eligible to compete for regional championships, drivers must be NHRA Sport Compact members. As a member, each driver will be assigned a region based upon their address on file with NHRA.
EAST REGIONS
Division 1 – Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont and West Virginia; Maritime Provinces, Eastern Ontario and Quebec, Canada.

East Region champions will be recognized following the conclusion of the NHRA Sport Compact Fallnationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in Englishtown, N.J. West Region champions will be honored following the NHRA Sport Compact World Finals at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona.

It is presenting the 11-race, $2.1 million NHRA Xplōd Sport Compact Racing Series at nine tracks across the country from April through October. The series features the largest guaranteed sport compact event purse of more than $27,000 paid out per event. In addition, the series offers a year-end championship fund of $144,000, along with more than $1.7 million in contingency payouts.
The series is highlighted by its five championship classes (Pro RWD, Pro FWD, Modified, Hot Rod and Honda Tuning All Motor). In addition, and at all nine of the stand-alone NHRA Xplōd Sport Compact Racing Series events, the NHRA Xplōd Stylefest showcases a compliment of the lifestyle and entertainment elements synonymous with today’s sport compact scene. That is soooo cool. Even without a purse (although money is always nice
). I always try to get to as many west coast races as I can, but this might get me out to Bandimere as well. Division 7 here I come!
Time to go get that physical, renew my NHRA membership, and get the cage certified.
