Well I have a SOHC ZC VTEC swap into my 93 civic hatch and I love it. I had a 90 Si hatch for a short time but scrapped it. The 5th gen auto kicks ***. Anyone that says otherwise is ignorant. Big difference? Yeah about a 30hp difference. You can feel it throughout the RPM range not just when you hit VTEC. Mileage stayed about the same. I expected an improvement because I would have to give my old engine lots of throttle and this one less.

I got the tranny rebuilt with a TCI master racing overhaul kit and also got the TCI high stall converter. My friend is boosting to a modest 185 hp (for the moment) on his auto Civic with over 150k on the trans and it shows no sign of giving out on him. Honda's unique automatic design is the ****. **** talkers can suck on deez nuts.

Honestly, I've had/have a 93 auto, a 90 stick, and a 01 stick; the manual trans cars rev up a bit quicker and get better mileage, but the auto has more torque multiplication in the low end. Overall I prefer the auto Civic slightly over the other Civics. I took the PS off the auto and now it revs up just like the manual trans Civics. Good ****. Enjoy your car.
