Default about body shop paint

when you want to get your whole car repainted the same color at a body shop, do they get the oem paint from like honda?? or do they all custom make the color?? because one body shop i went to said that all body shops custom make their paint either if you want a custom color or same color paint job...ALSO, when i bought my car, the doors on both sides came in two differerent color silvers than what the silver is supposed to be on the rest of the car...i guess some previous owner got into an accident and got a cheap paint job...anyways i asked the body shop if they could just repaint the doors to match the rest of the paint...and what he was saying was that i have to paint the fender too, to match the door, and the hood to match the fender etc...and its stupid cause i might as well paint whole whole damn car...but the paint besides on the door is still pretty clean...is this true of that person said?? thanks

Ok first the shop does not order the paint from honda they mix the paint at the shop that is why the cars have paint codes on them

Second A good paint shop can just paint the doors to match but they will have to blend into the fenders and quater panels to match.

I worked for a body shop for a couple of years, this is from my own personal experience...

Some shops mix their own paint and others order it from a paint supplier. I don't know if you know this but look inside the driver's side door jamb. There should be a number code on a little sticker - for example: NH-583M (Vogue Silver Metallic). That is what the shop will use when they either mix it or order it. As long as they follow the formula for that code, it should be the same color as the car - unless the whole car was repainted a different shade of silver. In that case (assuming you don't know what the paint code is) we had our supplier come down to the shop with a special camera that took a picture of the surface of the car and formulated a code for the paint.

As for painting just the doors, you can't really do that because although you are using the correct color this time around, it just won't match - especially on a silver car. Silver is a tough color to match. Unfortunately you have to blend the paint into the fenders and quarters. It sucks, but any reputable shop will do this so the sides of the car look uniform.

You could paint just the doors with the right color, but in my opinion and experience, unless you find someone to do it real cheap - it's not worth it. It will still be off. Get a second opinion from another shop and search for the best prices. Also try to see some of the work that the shop you eventually decide to go with has put out. Good luck

what is the difference between getting a dent fixed on the door where they fix the dent and paint the door only and just getting it repainted?? so how would it still be a different silver?? i got into an accident and how to get my hood, fenders, and front bumper replaced and painted...and they matched perfectly with the doors without getting the doors painted either...also getting my lips and mouldings and side skirts painted matched the rest of the car perfectly...so how does getting the door painted become a different silver??

Its called a blend. You can't just paint a fender and expect it to match like factory.
Larger panels are harder to match. Sometime body shops just paint a whole side to make it easier. Smaller pieces can get away easier.

they probly just painted teh bumper and maybe hood and blended teh fenders so it would match

When you paint a panel you really need to blend the surrounding panels.

Unless U have a black or white car, metalics must be blended

Why dont you just take it to where you got it fixed the first time since they did a good job

For metallic colors, good body shops will blend the door into another panel. Your door was obviously not blended, that's why it sticks out so badly.

i think the person who owned the car painted the doors himself...cause damn it was a bad job...the paint is chipping like heck (mostly on the door handles where you could see the stock paint again), they got paint on the window trim, and they didnt even clear coat it cause the paint looks SOOOOOO DULL that i cant even see any kind of reflection whatsoever...looks like some cheap spray can work...and its not even smooth...

the first time i got it at earl scheib...which was the worst experience...the paint matched perfectly which they told me the picked up the paint straight from honda...<<which i think is bullcrap...but the paint cracked like nothin...i could punch my bumper and watch the paint crack like glass...

The person who got it repainted probably just got it done at Maaco or Earl Sheib because that's the quality you get when you come from there: Single stage paint which fades after 6 months to a year. And the bumper would crack because those two places don't use flex additive in their paint to allow it to be slightly flexible.

Blending doesn't mean repainting the whole fender and whole rear quarter. If they're doing your door, they probably won't touch your rear quarter cuz that'll cost too much to blend in with all the detrimming and stuff involved. They'll rough sand your fender and lightly blend in the silver paint by maybe a foot or so and then re-clear the door and the fender. That way it leads to a smooth transition between 2 shades that are slightly off rather than a body panel line that makes it more obvious.

is the quality of having a body shop take a picture of the paint to get the exact color just as good as using the color code?? because i got the color code but they body shop said theres different shades of silver of my 97 civic of where the paint was made etc...and the sticker on the side of my door was ripped off so i cant get that information...soo would taking a picture be just as good?? thanks

A real to notch bodyshop has a paintscan gun they actually take it scan the paint on your car and that tells them exactly what to mix to get it as close as possible. If it sticks out bad just get a good clay bar and clay the whole car then wax it that may help some
