Help. What caused me to overheat!!
I got onto the highway today just before my car was at normal operating temp. I got to about 70mph and the needle kept rising till it was about 3/4 from the top. so I pulled over to stop. I started the car back up and pulled back out and turned the heat on high to see if would over heat again and it did but only ice cold air was coming from my heat vents and before I could get back off of the highway it started blowing really hot air like usual and the temp gauge went back down to normal so I finished my 25 mile commute without any other problems. what could have caused this? Any help is appreciated!! Thanks
The car is a 1991 civic std and it is bone stock! I replaced the radiator about 8 months ago so that is out of the question.

I second this.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but...
The coolant flow through the heater circuit of the system is not dependent on the thermostat being open or closed. The thermostat regulates the flow through only the radiator to maintain an optimum operating temperature.
The OP either has a lot of air in the system or the water pump is not doing it's job.
If the problem is air in the system, it must be determined if it is left over air from filling and not properly bleeding the system, or a head gasket that is going bad.

two friend had this same problem. An integra did just that but on a daily basis. My other friend's accord had the same problem despite repeated bleeding of coolant and replacing the thermostat.
Its the head gasket leaking air into the coolant system, causing it to cavitate and thus cannot pump coolant.
That is at least what we found on his car. It was a pain!
