2004 Si/RSX-S Tranny Swap?
Anyone tried the 6-speed from an RSX-S in an Si yet?
Benefits?
Drawbacks?
I was wondering if the RSX-S tranny has shorter gears than the 5-speed in the Si.
I just got my Si on Friday, I am really trying to avoid the mod-bug at least until the manufacturers warantee runs out. We'll see how well that goes though.
TIA

I *think* the RSX-S (05-06?) has the same final drive gear ratio as the Si tranny. Not 100% sure on that and not sure on how the individual gears match up/compare but you would (obviously
) gain the extra gear although I am not sure how the lower (1-4) gear acceleration would differ. Hopefully someone who knows for sure will come and clear this up.

Bah I always seem to only come up with half the info when I read and then try to remember something.
I will try to find the links where I got my half info to help you out. I need to start bookmarking more usefull threads.

Sweet, that's a keeper, and more up-to-date than what I had already...
Remember, the RSX-S's 6th gear (old AND new) is the same ratio as the EP's 5th. You won't gain any top speed or highway mileage (at least with the newer RSX-S tranny's final drive) -- you'll just shift more often to get there.
Thus, it would work best to have the additional ~2000 revs available for a closer-ratio transmission.

Not sure I understand, would you favor the swap or not?
I think that the closer ratio gears would keep the revs up so that you could accelerate faster by staying in the higher end of your power band.
I think you would probably loose in-town milage or be a gear above what you are used to being in, but the closer ratio (Y2M3 tranny is what i am favoring right now) would come in handy when you want to keep the revs up.

+1 mismatch , closer gears equals faster accel . i would also say havin an 8000 rpm redline would aid in makin havin 6 gears worth havin.

Yeah, I'd like the Y2M3 (JDM ITR), or in a more practical sense the PNN4 (current FG2) for its taller highway gear.
But, I'd think that the EP Si's low redline will just keep the shifts low, dropping the motor below its powerband.
The A3 motor does have an advantage in that there's no vtec "jump" in the upper revs; its torque is pretty consistent top-to-bottom. That means that it doesn't need shorter gears like the K motors with the high cam changeover.
Picture this -- shift at about 8500 in a Type-S, and the revs drop to about 6000 or so. Put the same tranny in an Si, and a 6800 rpm shift would start the next gear just above 4000 RPM.
I just think that shorter gearing and a high-revving motor go hand-in-hand. With higher revs, you can afford to stay in one gear longer, and a close-ratio tranny would keep accelerating.
On the few autocross courses I've done, I've been right near the top of 2nd gear in my EP. If I had a shorter 2nd but with the same redline, I'd either have to shift to 3rd (and back down two seconds later) or bounce off the rev limiter. However, if I had a higher redline, I wouldn't encounter that problem.
That being said... I still want 6 speeds. I just want the extra revs to really make it useful, too.
