H22 S-spec head swap
Hi guys,
Swapping an H22a into my Rover 600 later this year, currently collecting parts.
I came accross an S-Spec H22a from a 1999 Imported lude.
My block is a ~1994 H22a Jap import (im in the UK) so the 197bhp version. From what I can gather the S-Spec block pushes 220bhp through different cams and a higher compression ratio (11 instead of 10.6 iirc). What I cant work out is if the head is actually ported to a better level?
Also I was under the impression that on the whole, the first character of the engine code is _generally_ a sign the heads are interchangable. However I recently checked for another project and its clear the H22a and H23 have a different arrangement for the exhaust manifold.
From what I have read here - https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=922422 - the cams should just drop in, but is that still the case even with different generation engines?
Sorry for the waffle.
Cliffs:-
1. Does s-spec head have better porting than normal H22a
2. Will a '99 s-spec head fit on a '94 H22a
3. Do the cams just swap across
4. Is any of it worth it without having the higher compression ratio.

1. There are minor changes to the casting in this head. I can only verify this by observation... no actual measuring. The casting looks "smoother" and more refined. It is possible that Honda simply improved on the casting with the later models.
2. Yes. Use the head gasket for the year of block used.
3. Yes.
4. Higher compression works well with the "S" cams, but not 100% needed. A good tune would be helpful. If you want to bump the compression up, mill the head .010"

SteveoBA8: Cheers for that, but I did find that link on Google.
Well I decided against it in the end, was on Ebay and I didn't like the looks of the seller. Lots of car part scams on UK ebay atm, not worth the risk.
Thanks guys

You can still get improved compression by slightly milling the head like 2point6 said.
PS Tell Burley to start Ricardo Fuller as he is finally full fit (after 2 years of problems)..you will win more games.
