Wheel bearing question
Does it matter if the rubber seal on the wheel bearing is on the inside or the outside of the knucle (ie rubber seal towards the hub).
If so I'm going to kill these ******* that installed my bearings. On one of them, the seal is on the outside, the other one the seal is on the inside.
Craig - Who hopes it doesn't mater

Spoke to Dave_B Senior and it sounds like the rubber seal is just a dust shield. I should be ok, but it won't last as long as a correctly installed bearing. As long as it gives me enough time to get the car moved and buy my own press so I don't have to deal with any more crappy shops

At least now you know if anything comes up before you leave for TX.

Yes, it does make a difference. The metal ring should be on the inside, it protects the rubber seal from damage. The rubber seal under the hub is protected by the hub, so it doesn't need one.

That is noted, and he just needs the car running to get it to TX. He'll be changing it once the car is there.

You should take it back to the idiots and say all you want is the bearing. Tell them you dont want them to screw it up again so you'll do the work!! Prob wont work but cant hurt to try. Then you wont have to splurge for another ball joint.

Then just bring it up along with some beer and I'll take care of it for ya.
Seriously though, you should be able to make it to TX just fine. If your really that worried, on your trip out, just stop by and I'll make it happen for ya.

What does the wheel bearing have to do with the ball joint?

Nothing.. He just got it confused because I was talking to him about the ball joints also.
The shitty shop didn't press the ball joint down all the way either. So when I get home I have to make sure they atleast got the c-clip back on there

Well man, you know if you need to, come on up this way, I've got a couch with your name on it if you need it. Either way, keep me posted as to when you'll be through this area.

Really? I gave them the parts to replace them with which I bought from Len so they should be OEM.

Just had my wheel bearings pressed in today also. Luckily these guys did it right. But you'll be fine as far as getting to TX with it that way.
-Erik. Needs a press

well at least I'm not the only one going through wheel bearing whoes....I have to replace one of my hub assemblies becuase it's just too worn.. So the R is just chillin halfway under my on jack stands.....I hate being R less, plus my new intermediate shaft doesn't wanna go all the way in the diff. So it was a fun filled weekend that just past and now I get to work in good ol 20-30 this weekend....Damn michigan, damn groundhog.....
Well looks like i'll be going back to that shitty shop tomorrow
Not ony is the bearing in backards, but there is a ton of play in the bearings and its really rough.... Now I have to get them to replace with a new bearing
EDIT: They have to replace both bearings... The one installed correctly has the play in it and the other one is installed backwards

Well it looks like today is a bad day for wheel bearings all around. Turns out one of mine is in wrong or damaged also. Left front (where I tend to have all suspension and axle problems) has a major notch in it under braking. grinding feeling, noise, etc.
This is why I hate when I don't have the proper tools to do everything myself.

Yep I hear you... I think I might be taking a trip to harbor freight tomorrow for a press and doing a charge back on my credit card for the $140 they charge me to f' up my new bearings.
