Default order in which you would weld a tubular style manifold and any advice on what i'm doing

i have my manifold mocked up with tape and super glue :D, a welder from work will be welding it up for me. i will have everything marked so everything lines up, but i'd like to know how he should go about it so i can talk to him bout it. i'd hate for him to weld it up and everything not line up like how i arranged it.

should he weld each runner seperately, then once all 4 runners are welded, weld one runner at a time to the head flange then to the collector and do it that way for all four runners? i just don't see how he'll be able to weld it all if its all tacked together already assembled. i'm just worried, i want it to come out right. heres a picture of the collector he welded for me, let me know what you guys think about it PLEASE!

and heres a top-mount and a ram style mani i'm still trying to figure which one i'm gonna go with, but in either case, the steps to have it welded up would be the same. i have no welder so super glue and tape was my friends.

btw......these manifolds are for my 99 accord, the F-series engine isn't supported much at all.

heres that same mani, but better arranged to mate w/ the collector.

and heres a top mount i'm mocking up and in limbo with, this or the ram.

Will both designs fit? The top mount looks like it puts the collector really far from the engine.

both mani's will fit with no modifcations. it looks like it puts it far but it doesn't, it'll clear everything, other then that i wouldn't be doing it.

to do it correctly he is going to have to completely strip each piece of all the glue and tape residue before he even tacks it.

why not just stand there while he tacks the runners instead of bringing him a sticky mess. Acetone and wire brush are your new friends.

i'm not going to give it to him like that, thats just for mocking it up, i don't have a welder so i have to improvise. i'll have it cleaned up marked so when i take it to him he can tack it together. how else was i suppose to make the manifold? i was able to come up with 3 different mock ups.......2 ram horns....both a lil different from each other as with the angles and a top-mount......and i did it all sitting at my desk at work or in my house and i didn't waste a bit of metal.

thanks, but i was actually looking for advice on the order in which it should be welded up and a lil critic on the collector. runners first, one at a time then connect them to the head flange then weld on the collector, or should it just be all tacked together and he needs to weld it up from there?

Good work. I think you're on the right track. This will be my next project. I am sick of my log manifold.

I never build a manifold, but as nether of your design are egual lenth, I'll go with the top Mount, in a accord you'll have lot of space for the downpipe if turbo is on top, but think about something to protect your hood. And put some coating on the hot side of the turbo, if it rust it'll look like **** on top of the manif.

does it matter that it isn't equal length? i mean seriously......how many manifolds out there are really really equal length?

yeah i feel you bout the space we have, but either style will have clearence.

now......how bout some advice on the steps or order in which it would be welded?

the runner lengths usually lose priority to packaging

well unfortunatly im still in the planning prosses of making my first mani so i cant give you a definate answer on the asembly order but i would say that what ever the easiest order for you to tape it all up would probably be the easiest to weld it as well and maybe do all the primaries first then the colector and the head flange last?

good ****! I hope it works out for you, I'm attempting the same thing, but out of stainless. Lucky for me, I work in a machine shop, so I'm making the flanges on a cnc.

hey B..

I would suggest you weld each runner first but not to the collector. Then after all 4 of them are done, then you weld them to the header flange, and then you weld it to the collector.

I hope this helps

ps: Can you put a LIST of how many parts you need? like how many els did you order, what flange (cuz bmc doesnt say F23). and etc..

For a manifold similar to this, I ordered 12 90's from Ace Staineless. Also got 2 1ft lengths of pipe.

runners first.... however make sure your welder does a good tack on all your pipes first. atleast 4 quadrants on every joint. Otherwise your tacks could break while welding and then cause the runners to move. then weld runners to collector. then weld runners to head flange. Thats the way i do it, it has worked for me.

Thanks for the plug Chris.

I thought those 90's looked familiar Byran...I wouldn't mind seeing some pics of the finished product. Good luck!

I started at the head flange and fully welded each piece as I went. Also welded one to the collector before starting the next runner. The key to doing it this way is think ahead and also the measure 6 million times weld once rule applies here. May not be the most efficient way to do it but it worked fine for me and had 10hrs in the first top mount that i did. Other style manifolds take alot less time, there isn't much to figure out with a ram horn. I'm not 100% a fan of your topmount design but thats just my opinion. Top mounts like long equal runners. I'm not busting your *****, just giving advice.
