Okay i recently rebuilt my motor and turboed my car. I didn't change the timing belt because the under drive pulley would not come off. We had a breaker bar and a 5ft long pole and couldn't get it off. I was lookin at my motor today and i noticed half of the timing belt is good but the other half is almost gong! Im pretty much going to have a half timing belt! How could it be wearing down only half of the belt! Is the whole belt going to snap or is it going to be okay as long as the other half is in good condition? If not, how much does it cost to have one replaced by a mechanic. I put a double headgasket on my car but i dont think that would do it would it? Thanks, Jim

Wow no way would I drive my car with the timing belt in that condition. Get that fixed ASAP!!!

 

Is the under drive pulley threaded normal or is it reverse threaded? Thanks, Jim

 

u should just replace it i wouldnt even drive my car with it looking like that i think the dealer charges 400 or 500 i changed my timing belt by myself and just bought the parts at the dealership but if u cant get it off just have a mechanic fix it for u and change it but my opinion dont drive ur car till u get it changed

 

do you think it would be safe to drive down the road, have a tire place break the nut loose then drive it back and do it myself? Its weird how its just splitting in 2.....

 

how far down the road? i would just keep trying at my own house if i were you but u can try it i wouldnt recommend it but since u probaly tried to break it loose just call them first and see if they would do it then drive down there get it loosend and then tighten it a little to where it wont come out then hurry home and fix it how long have u been driving like that?

well what i would do if i was u i would find someone u knoe that can tow ur car there and break the bolt loose then tow it right back home to do it ur self thats what i would do what motor do u have by the way is the b18b ive done my si and gsr i noticed the b16s timing belt was fucced when i looked at it then i seen a bolt down there and it was rubbing on the timming belt the whole time but yeah its pretty easy just look at this thread and it will show ya heres the link https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1404959 its basicially the same way u get the idea when u see it

 

Pu it this way, that could last hundreds of miles like that, or you could start the car and it breaks. Personally I would not even start it like that, but hey its you head and valves you are putting at risk.

Why did it do this??? Dont know, it could be a bad belt, something could of got stuck on a pulley and chewed the belt up.

 

it looks like there's something stuck in there rubbing on it, wearing it down.take off the plastic cover and vc and take a look.

 

i wouldn't start it if i was you...looks like its about to snap..by looking at the top of the belt...

 

i can suggest this,

go to home depo (if you can get another car), rent a compressor. see if you can rent a 500ft/lbs impact gun. bring it all home and that should take off the crank pully bolt. if they don't have a gun for rent; buy one, bring it home, use it and return it. that's what we did for my friends timing belt install when we coulden't get the crank pully off.

 

Dont' even think about starting your motor until you put on a new timing belt. How are you trying to take the crank pulley off?

 

okay guys, great news. I took that plastic cover off and instead of cutting the bad belt off, i found a way to get it off without pulling the under drive pulley, all i gotta doo is pull that one motor mount, let the motor drop some, get it around the crank then raise the motor up over the mount and get it on the cams. Therefor i do not have to remove the under drive pulley thank you guys so much!

 

Im still not positive on what did that. I put my finger up between the valve cover and belt and it felt like it had very little to no clearance but maybe thats the way it is. inside the bottom of the valve cover there were rubber pieces. Also in the plastic cover, there was the center pipe that you can see missing, it was like it was shaven off by something like a screw that i might have dropped in there?

 

when i rebuilt the motor and had it on a stand, i put a crowbar on the clutch studs and a breaker bard and a 4ft pipe on the under drive pulley and had a 250lb person hanging on it thats how tight this under drive pulley is. I had a motor before this, it was hard to get off but nothing like this. I think once i get the new belt on, i am going to put my new under drive pulley on at a tire shop. I still don't get how you're having trouble getting the crank pulley off. That is what you're refering to when you say underdrive pulley isn't it? Are you using a crank pulley tool of some sort to hold the pulley while you loosen the crank pulley bolt?

I also don't see how you could get the plastic off to get the timing belt out much less a new one in without removing the crank pulley. Could you explain please?

 

i burned that timing belt cover to death so i could rip it off I will get a new one when i can get my under drive off.

 

Are you using one of these (or similar) to hold the pulley/engine from turning while you loosen the bolt? If so I can't imagine it would still be withstanding all that force.

 

mine did the same thing... in my case i was a valve cover nut that was sdropped down in the timing cover... just fyi

 

I HATE YOU... FIX THAT **** RIGHT NOW before you snap the belt and f*** everthing up

You need to just order the crank pulley holder in that picture. Amazon sells it for like $25 and it'll make this so much easier.
