Default car won't start, doesnt seem to be a starter issue.

at the end of the summer the starter went on my car, or atleast i think it was the starter, was having a hard time starting it for a week or so then after that is wouldnt start at all, wouldn't roll over, lights would power up thats it..

the car will bump start so figured it would be the starter. i just got around to putting another one in it yesterday and tried starting it up today. atfirst just the lights would power up so i swapped out the battery with a different one b/c it was almost dead anyways. with the battery from the car im driving now (another 91), everything powers up great, but when you go to actually start the car, it makes a bunch of ticking sounds.

i had to move my car so i bump started it, when driving down the road a bit to turn around, it started doing some funky stuff for like 10seconds, then would stop, then about 15-20seconds start up again, back and forth.. the clock started to flicker, the temp gauge went all the way up to the top, the tach&speedo would stop working.. then it would go back to normal, and then start up again. for some reason the VAFC didn't mess up at all though.

so, since it still won't work with a dif starter, what else should i be looking at. its not throwing any codes..

all this is on a 91 civic hb, d15b vtec, 90 si tranny.. the starter i took out of the car is 92-95, and the starter i put in was from a 95 si...

here's a pic of the main relay

*on this one here, 3 of the bottom 4 have some brown bubbly crap around them. on the top between 1 and 2 one of the circuit lines was blocked with another brown bubbly spot. and off to the left of the relay, the two sort of in the middle on the left there was a bit more bubbly brown/black ****..

im not the smartest when it comes to electrical **** but would this end up being from the board starting to fry?

I'd take a good hard look at the ground on the starter. I think that's your problem.

But I'm not sure, and I'm really just bumping since you gave good detailed info and a pic to ponder. Good luck.
